Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Arch on my Acer Aspire V3-371. It was an exhibition model I got for a nice price. Upgraded the ram from 4 to 16GB, and the 500GB HDD to 120GB SSD. The wifi card (Qualcomm Atheros AR9462 Wireless Network Adapter rev 01) does not work properly. It seems fine, but will only accept connecting to 5GHz, not 2.4GHz. I have not done anything to try to figure it out. My signature explains why. There are also some issues with the touchpad. I suspect the touchpad-issue may also be a result of bad treatment from a customer or some kids or something.

Overall: It's a cheap model. It's relatively thin and lightweight, and easy to access the ram, hdd-bay and wifi-card. It works smooth and looks nice. The battery life is also good (something that has a lot to do with my cpu/gpu-friendly use, the ssd, and of course Arch Linux). I don't regret buying it.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer Cloudbook 14 works very well with Arch and other distributions. Just need to add some options to the kernel parameters at boot, I've documented the whole process in the Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_Cloudbook

Lenovo B5070 59-436045 .
This has Hybrid graphics,  one intel and one ATI . I use intel card mostly though when i tested PRIME it seems to work . I have not tested using the ATI card as the primary card.
Other than that everything seems to work including wifi, bluetooth etc.

Trolls are deceitful often using ambivalence as a method of covertly insulting, intimidating, or inciting a person or persons for their own sadistic pleasure. They pick their words very carefully and are therefore able to defend their masked attempts at creating unrest, frequently redirecting the blame onto the community and its supposed failure to understand them properly. Trolling is prohibited.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Hello,

I'm running Arch on my Asus G501JW (ROG) ...

- has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M (discrete 3D-GPU) with an Intel Graphics Card (intel+nvidia drivers with bumblebee)

- dual Monitor setup works great too (Laptop Monitor + HDMI Monitor)

- PlayOnLinux works great (recognizes the Nvidia GPU, can switch wine-window to second monitor without trouble)

I'm happy smile

My Asus G501JW has an Nvidia Optimus... it works great with bumblebee.
Follow the wiki pages closely for setup and you should be fine.

I used the nvidia drivers, not the nouveau ones (nouveau might work great too, I never tested it).

there`s nothing to worry about nvidia optimus on Arch, Bumblebee will take care of that, i`m using it without any problem on my Asus S551-LN.

Bumblebee has worked very well for me so far, exceeding expectations.  I would say it seems to be safe to buy a laptop with nvidia optimus, as long as you aren't afraid of doing a tiny bit of extra work to get optimus up and running.  I had to do a bit of google/forum searching to get Steam working properly with primusun/optirun.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo Thinkpad E560 (Tested under Plasma 5)
- Display works
- Audio works
- Wi-Fi works
- Ethernet works
- External display works
- All USB ports work
- DVD drive works
- Legacy boot CAN be enabled
- Secure Boot CAN be disabled
- Card reader is untested (will update once tested)
- Almost all hotkeys work (some will need to be manually configured to plasma shortcuts)

*NOTE: You will need to boot Windows at least once to enable the touchpad/trackpoint. It can even be a Windows install disc. Boot it once, move the mouse and reboot into Linux. The activation is permanent.

EDIT 05/02: Card reader tested working
EDIT 05/02: Forgot to mention. Bluetooth also works

I had some common hardware problems under the prior kernel (4.3), some of them have been already mentioned in various posts here (blank screen, wifi and audio mostly), now I am in position to use my laptop with no problems at all, at least for now. Works great. I am very happy smile

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Arch on an ASUS C200M Chromebook, pretty smooth out of the box, with some minor research to unmute the correct audio channels. GNOME3 is estimating ~12 hours for battery life at a full charge

this is a desktop I built the cpu is from a older comp I was using and a hexa-core(value type amd but good enough) is on the way as well as a ssd and another 8gig ram of same the mobo is actually pretty good and durable at that and the bios itself is dual. psu 550 I wont be overclocking and everything is energy efficient. I use catalyst for gaming for ati driver in the git region is way too dependent on things as well as gl stuff from git to use the latest games with gl 4+ stuff.

hmm just noticed this is laptops that run I would delete this if I could im planing on getting a lenovo 11* will see whats up and put up.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

The thread is laptop related. I think that many willing-to-buy give a peep over here. Writing about assembled desktop is a bit misleading.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 15 (multi-mode notebook with multi touch display and semi-Retina display)

- 4th Gen Intel® Core™ i3-4010U (1.70GHz 1600MHz 3MB)
- Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 4400
- Mobile NVIDIA GPU, 720M (shared memory) - NOTE: This is Optimus hardware!
- 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
- Intel 7260 b/g/n Wireless (2x2 BGN)
- Bluetooth 4.0
- 15.6" HD 10-point multitouch display (1920x1080)

This little fella shipped with Windows 8, or 8.1... not sure anymore. Either one of these. So of course, it defaults to UEFI booting. I haven't tested primusrun or optirun on Arch yet, but I can assure you the Xorg "intel" driver works perfectly fine. If you like you can add some tweaks to small Xorg config files to enable funny stuff like compositing. I did run other Linuxes on that machine, and I can also confirm that - when installed, modprobe'd, and installed correctly, the NVIDIA GPU is also accessible and works as normal.

I had to disable UEFI boot and switch to "Legacy" in BIOS, and load the BIOS defaults for "Other OS". This seems to work without issues.

Sound card is pretty standard and runs as you would expect through PulseAudio.

// EDIT:
Wifi / WLAN working without any modifications needed, through "wifi-menu" or the tools that come with your favorite flavor of GUI / DE.
