unable to connect to wifi with wpa_supplicant

I have tried to connect to a Netgear WNDR3400v3 router with WPA2-PSK encryption using
linux 4.4.1 and linux-lts and found the error below in the output of wpa_supplicant:

nl80211: Ignore connect event (cmd=46) when using userspace SME

The network controller is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 that uses the nl80211 driver in
the kernel.
