This one's been frustrating me for a little.
I need to set up a file server to be accessed from over the internet by Windows 7 and 10 clients. It needs to be password protected (not necessarily encrypted though) and cannot be ftp because files need to be able to be edited on the server space. SMB won't work because windows refuses to resolve DNS addresses over the internet and my server does not have a static IP address (nor can I get one for it). WebDAV was the next option I went to. I got it working once, then tried to set up authentication, none of which works though windows explorer. Works just fine though chrome, but this needs to be accessed from the file manager. Now I cannot get windows to stop asking for a password (which fails), even though I have removed all authentication from Apache's config file. Again, works in chrome as expected with no issues.
Clearly I am not going about this properly. VPN is also not an option.
Please provide some guidance.
Thanks a lot!

While I have not tried it, you might want to give owncloud a try.
