Laptop resumes to terminal screen with pciehp hot-add error, frozen

The last two times I've suspended my laptop to RAM (lid close), it fails to fully resume, giving me only the following on a terminal-like screen instead of resuming to the window manager:

Dec 31 22:56:23 arch_zbook kernel: pciehp 0000:3d:03.0:pcie24: Cannot add device at 0000:60:00
Dec 31 22:56:23 arch_zbook kernel: pciehp 0000:3d:03.0:pcie24: Device 0000:60:00.0 already exists at 0000:60:00, cannot hot-add
Dec 31 22:56:23 arch_zbook kernel: pciehp 0000:3d:03.0:pcie24: Cannot add device at 0000:60:00
Dec 31 22:56:23 arch_zbook kernel: pciehp 0000:3d:03.0:pcie24: Device 0000:60:00.0 already exists at 0000:60:00, cannot hot-add

I can't get off of that screen. ctrl+alt+del does nothing (but I don't have it defined as anything either), I tried my keyboard shortcut for my openbox menu and choosing log out without success, ctrl+alt+fn[2-9] doesn't get me to a different tty... I just have to press the power button to manually kill it and then boot up again.

There's a somewhat similar post here which points to a ~2 year old bug report here. I don't think these are identical, as 1) no one has posted a confirmation of the behavior since 3.18, and 2) the author only mentions it showing in his log vs. a resume freeze.

Some system info:

Are there any methods I could use to track down the issue? This is a huge hindrance to normal laptop usage, especially since I use this at work. In case it helps, here's a full suspend/resume cycle, or at least I think it should be. I went from "lid closed" through the failed resume, stopping at when I manually hard killed it with the power button. Note this is with journalctl -r, so it starts with the most recent messages at the top.

Re: Laptop resumes to terminal screen with pciehp hot-add error, frozen

Anyone? I can resume, but I'm greeted to a screen filled with these pciehp hot-add errors every time. Something's awry. In the meantime, there's some old stuff around:

- 2 year old kernel bug report with no action
- arch bug report with no response other than asking if kernel 3.1x is any different
- arch forum post about blacklisting mei and mei_me (didn't change anything for me)

Anything at all would be helpful...what device is this, what is it trying to "hot-add", is this anything to be concerned about, if not how can I suppress the message... just looking for some direction as I really have no idea.

Re: Laptop resumes to terminal screen with pciehp hot-add error, frozen

what device is this

... Device 0000:60:00.0 already exists ...
$ lspci
...
60:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS5249 PCI Express Card Reader (rev 01)

Re: Laptop resumes to terminal screen with pciehp hot-add error, frozen

@alphaniner: well, color me embarrassed! Thanks for that; I didn't even re-scan the lspci output, as googling the issue popped this post up near the top and I simply observed no one had responded for 3 months.

Any suggestions on what in the world is going on with it? I'm assuming this means a smart card reader. In googling around further knowing this, there's some mention of acpiphp being involved, and trying it along with pciehp.pciehp_force=0. I don't seem to have this module. I do have an acpiphp_ibm module, but when I try to modprobe I get:

modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'acpiphp_ibm': No such device

Not sure what to do at this point. I'm not seeing a pciehp module, not finding much information about acpiphp on arch, or much else about what the issue is. I'd be fine to just disable the device as I don't use it?

Re: Laptop resumes to terminal screen with pciehp hot-add error, frozen

If I'm not mistaken, pciehp and acpiphp are built in to the kernel:

$ zgrep -i "hotplug_pci" /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_PCIE=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI_IBM=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI=y
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_ZT5550=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_CPCI_GENERIC=m
CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_SHPC=m

I don't know if its possible to use kernel command line options to control builtins.

acpiphp_ibm is "ACPI Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver IBM extension". Probably not relevant to your hardware.

Since you don't use the device, I can't see any reason not to try disabling it.
