You can use pkgfile or the -F option of pacman to determine which package contains a file.

pkgfile libKF5KCMUtils.so.5

pacman -Fys libKF5KCMUtils.so.5

Thanks, it comes from kcmutils, installing that fixes the issue without installing plasma

Have you tried the solution from the wiki?

Yes. My setup is exactly as it is on the Wiki page (which is how things are by default now).

Things were working with Plasma 5.5, and the problem popped up when I updated to 5.6.

I created a new user account just to test if the issue was something in my profile, but the issue exists with a new account as well.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I have a 4k Asus Zenbook laptop. I installed Arch with KF5 a few week ago. After a painful experience I managed to make everything look good: I set "Force fonts DPI" to 170 in System Settings -> Fonts and I set "Screen Scaling" to 2 in System Settings -> Display and Monitor -> Scale Display. Everything looked good: KF5 apps, Qt5 apps, Qt4 apps, GTK 2 and 3 apps. However, today I ran a pacman -Syu and qt5 packages updated from 5.5.1-10 to 5.6.1 and kf5 packages from 5.19.0-1 to 5.20.0-1. Now the rendering is fucked: If I leave "Force Fonts DPI" to 170, all Qt4 and GTK{2,3} apps look good, Qt5 apps look huge (see http://i.imgur.com/ZtPRFZv.png ), if I uncheck "Force Fonts DPI", Qt5 apps look good, all other look too small (see http://i.imgur.com/dyeaG3d.png). If I also set as in the HiDPI wiki page QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=1 and QT_DEVICE_PIXEL_RATIO=2, then it looks even worse (see http://i.imgur.com/y5Ao4Tz.png). The only bearable solution, is to set Force Fonts DPI to 170, no scaling, and to set ONLY QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=1, but in this case, the icons and menus in Qt5 apps are too big, see http://i.imgur.com/pYZr6cW.png . Can someone help me with this?

I have exactly the same problem. I'm now stuck to QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=1 too which makes everything appear to big. On some applications the dialogs are so huge (KMail settings for example) that the apply and cancel buttons are out of the screen and impossible to reach. Also the QT_SCALE_FACTOR environment variable is broken, it should support non integer values but if I use a non integer value (1.5 for example) everything gets totally screwed (fonts are smaller than without scaling at all, icons are cut off, popups open on the wrong place...).
Another thing I don't like is, with  QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR enabled qt5 Windows are rescaled on en external monitor but qt4 and gtk apps are huge which breaks the way of using xrandr for screen scaling.

As a bug report: Bug 359127 - Desktop theme KCM 'details' and editing tab no longer present/functional - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359127

Rule of thumb: Unmaintained bits and pieces will be removed sooner or later - few plasma bits:

Remove khelpcenter from next Plasma release?: https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-d … 50360.html
- there is now a new maintainer and the khelpcenter will be part of the KDE Applications

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Just started playing with Plasma again. Installed the plasma package last night. Feels smoother.

However, I can't get my webcam's mic to capture sound. The video works just fine but the mic does not work on hangouts for example.

I've tinkered with many settings but not sure where else to look. Audio out works, video works but not the built in mic. I didn't have to install any additional modules BC my webcam was listed to work with the built in ones. The C920 Logitech Pro.

I'm posting this here BC the cam worked on my awesome setup yesterday. Not sure what I'm missing.

EDIT:
I found the solution, I had to change my settings -> Configuration Tab -> Built-in Audio to "Analog Stereo Output"

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I finally moved to 5.5 a few weeks ago, upon upgrade to 5.6, I could not use any app after login.  Luckily, I have a laptop with btrfs/snapper so I could find out what changed.  The only way I was to get back to a working state was to delete a few directories under ~/.config and reconfigure my desktop again from scratch which I spent a few hours previously on already.

It's funny that the main reason for removal seems to be it "not working", which is simply not true. I also find the suggestion to "just use a transparent theme" very unhelpful, considering there is only a transparent version of breeze, but not breeze dark. As always, the dark version gets the shorter end of the stick.

I guess I will be sticking with 5.5 for a while longer, which is a pity since apparently 5.6 fixes quite some bugs, including the mouse drag lag one I've been having.
Or maybe I'll start patching plasma-frameworks again to undo the retarded "fix" to background contrast adding a hint of transparency when it was supposed to improve contrast. Adding transparency does not improve contrast.

currently i am facing a weird issue with the latest plasma on arch in a virtualbox. whenever i close a kde program, be it dolphin, konsole or anything else, i get an error 'executable: konsole PID: 1850 Signal: Floating point exception (8) time....'
however i don't get these errors when closing firefox for example.

i don't get these errors at all on my pc installation.

This combination of findings suggests these particular crashes could be due to a problem involving the swrast DRI drivers and glibc 2.23, see e. g. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360433#c2.
Note the said messages about [kms]_swrast_dri.so cannot necessarily be seen in systemd journal. You may have to pick an appropriate PID from the output of "coredumpctl list" and hand it to gdb by running "coredumpctl gdb <PID>".

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

after I updated to the latest kde , sometimes when I lock my screen and then after sometime come back to it , instead of unlocking the session it logins in a new session. it seems that the old one crashes somehow.
at a couple of those new session I would see a error popup in tray that kinit5 crashed or something like that. the error massage in no longer shown but the bug I described still happens.
it is now random but it seems random, cause I have locked the session at night and this didn't happened and also locked it for 1hour and it happened.
how can I fix this?

"solved".
I think it is a yakuake issue. If the screen start flickering I can solve calling yakuake and pressing enter. It's stupid but it works.

I had the same issue on my laptop ( a no name brand), this solved my issue:

- Create a file named 20-intel.conf on /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   #Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
   Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

Worked on openSUSE Tumbleweed
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake Integrated Graphics (rev 07)

Thank you

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

same scaling issues as everyone since 5.6 here.
Either big fonts, either big UI, your pick.. profile reset and what not doesnt solve it.
Thats because the hi dpi wiki page makes you create a file with:

export QT_DEVICE_PIXEL_RATIO=2
export GDK_SCALE=2
export GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.5

in /etc/profile.d/qt-hidpi.sh or similar.

just remove it, reset fonts to auto scaling in kde, and there you go ;-) (though you might want to tweak the values instead specially for GTK!)

Heck that should illustrate the problem quite well ;-) (scaling zero, ui is 2-3x bigger than the scaling-zero version)

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I experienced quite a lot of frustration with KF5 on my laptop (Dell M6400, Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M -  G94GLM) until I recently gave a try to nouveau, instead of the nvidia proprietary driver (340.96-1).

All the following problems are now solved:

  • very frequent X crash when resuming from sleep

  • sddm very often required several tens of seconds (if not minutes) to accept/reject the password

  • dual screen issues when booting / resuming from sleep

  • quite frequent compositor crashes (I use the OpenGL 2.0 backend with the GLX interface, which was the most stable with the proprietary nvidia driver, but still...)

  • many graphic glitches when running games

So far the 2D performance is excellent and the desktop is snappy again. I haven't tried heavy 3D games yet, I don't play much. The only problem with nouveau was that my main laptop screen resolution was 640x480 after boot. I fixed it with the following lines into a shell script I dropped in [~/.config/autostart-scripts:

  xrandr --output LVDS-1 --newmode "1920x1200R" 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync
  xrandr --addmode LVDS-1 "1920x1200R" --output LVDS-1
  xrandr --output LVDS-1 --mode "1920x1200R"

PS: I got the timings, as described here, from:

cvt -r 1920 1200 60

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Hi!

I cannot start KDE anymore on my MacBook. It crashes after the login and the screen stays splitted in two parts.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know how to fix it?

Do you have an external monitor? I have a similar issue on my work laptop, but only if I plug in my docking station (which has a monitor connected). I have not managed to solve it, but removing my kscreen subdirectory in .local/config and restarting SDDM will at least make my setup workable again.

der_joachim you're my hero now! How did you debug it? Is there any log I can check for the next time? I checked the xorg one and everything looked fine.

Glad to help. My troubleshooting process was mainly trial and error. I have yet to find the exact cause of the problem. I just used journalctl and found some errors related to my ATI card (not at my work computer right now), so I figured (after some poor guesses) that kscreen may be the culprit. BTW, I never solved these ATI issues satisfactorily, but that is off-topic in this thread.

Anyone else noticed that gtk3 breeze theme broke after some recent update? Firefox looks terrible now. All the padding between elements is gone. Text selection is gone. Selected items in the list are not highlighted either.
