Gnome IPsec VPN

My university switched to an L2TP/IPsec based VPN server.
I am using GNOME and was happy using its network manager for managing VPNs until now.
However unless I understand, now it seems I have to install strongswan/openswan/racoon, and manually write config files.
This seems especially messy since IPs, device names, etc. seem to be hardcoded.

I cannot be the first to run into this, but I couldn't find anything in the forums.
Could someone tell me the proper approach if there is one?
