[Solved] Connecting to vpn server with openvpn with server parameters.

The following website advertise a free vpn server: https://www.vpnme.me

They give configuration instruction for networkmanager (for Ubuntu according to the server): https://www.vpnme.me/configs_pptp_ubuntu.html

I am trying to connect with the command line openvpn. But according to the wiki I need some certificate and keys and the configuration above mention none of this (naively ignoring them or commenting out the options don't work; openvpn complains it wants the certificates). I am far from a specialist with openvpn; does someone more knowledgeable than me can convert these instructions into a openvpn config file? How come that networkmanager (that I prefer not to use) is supposedly  able to connect without them?

I have also seen that, according to the same website, the configuration for Windows are quite similar. Windows supposedly has dialog boxes analog to network manager. I am at loss with openvpn that apparently asks for much more informations.

For openvpn what you need should be here https://www.vpnme.me/freevpn.html

Re: [Solved] Connecting to vpn server with openvpn with server parameters.

I have seen this page but I am unable to configure openvpn with this. According to the wiki I need to create a configuration file that can be writen by filling the value in the prototype: /usr/share/openvpn/examples/client.conf but this file refers to

ca ca.crt
cert client.crt
key client.key

and I have not these files. Commenting out the options make openvpn complain with

Options error: You must define CA file (--ca) or CA path (--capath)

I am obviously missing something.

Those should all be inside (inline/embedded) the .ovpn. Last time I tried I think openvpn didn't like it that way but do try the instructions they have. If it doesn't work you can always create separate files for ca.crt, client.crt and client.key and get what you need from the .ovpn.

Re: [Solved] Connecting to vpn server with openvpn with server parameters.

@R00KIE Sorry but I don't understand that. The only things I have is the terse instructions available at (https://www.vpnme.me/freevpn.html) and a client.conf prototype distributed with openvpn (client.conf); the content of which I put below. There is no embedded *.crt or *.key or any sort of certificates embedded in this file. I may simply miss the obvious but I am lost.

Here is the /usr/share/openvpn/examples/client.conf distributed as part of the package openvpn

Re: [Solved] Connecting to vpn server with openvpn with server parameters.

I feel a bit stupid. I justed needed to download the config for the openvpn protocol and it works. I was trying to configure openvpn with the pptp config. I  don't know if it is possible.

They are not the same thing so you can't as far as I know. Don't forget to edit your first post and add [Solved] to the title.
