Terminal apps take all bandwidth -> no connection with firefox etc.

Hi there, I am having a kind of peculiar problem.
I was able to help me out with most of my Arch issues over the last years, but this one is puzzling me.

Whenever a terminal app (eg pacman) downloads stuff, I can't connect to any websites with firefox.
Even existing connections like audio streams pause. This issue appeared last week, but could have
been present longer without me noticing. I don't know how to investigate this actually, so if you have
any advice on this, I'd be glad.

I am running an up to date installation on a Thinkpad T430 with Gnome 3 and network manager.
Network card is Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300. This is happening on wifi, I didn't test it on ethernet.

Cheers,
