Fan always on in HP dv6-7170ss

Hello!

Recently I installed Archlinux 2016 that came with the 4.5.1-1 kernel but I have problems with my fan: it's always on and it's noisy. Searching in the forum, some people recommended to install the kernel lts. After installing and configuring the boot loader to initiate the system with the new kernel , I still have the same problem.

So there is some kernel that doesn't have this problem?

Thanks you very much!

My system:
HP dv6-7170ss
Intel i7-3610QM CPU 2.30GHz
Nvidia Geforce GT-630M
Archlinux: 2016.04.01
KDE: 5.21.0 KDE plasma: 5.6.3 64bits
Kernel actual: 4.4.8-1-lts

I don't think an older kernel could solve the issue since your CPU and so your entire system is not recent.

my first suggestion is to use the latest kernel from official repo.
then, I don't know if it's an hardware specific problem, since I don't have your laptop... so try to find problem for your specific model on the web
third and latest, is to check the BIOS settings because I know there is an option to force fan always-on

if nothing will help you, let us know, I have some other ideas to expose

+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox
+laptop: Apple | MacBook (2,1) | 2GB ram | Mac OS X 10.4 -> DIED
+ultrabook: Dell | XPS 13 (9343) | 8GB ram | 256GB ssd | FullHD display | Windows 8.1 64bit ArchLinux x86_64 w/ Gnome

Re: Fan always on in HP dv6-7170ss

This post might be relevant.
What I have gathered, since I have the same problem, is that this bug affects kernels from 3.18.1 and above, and it seems to be affecting only some laptop models. I have an old HP 620 model, and my fan exhibits the same behavior as yours on 3.18.1 and above (I didn't try it on kernels more recent than 4.2.x myself, but other people have the same problem), ie it starts full speed and stay that way, no matter how cool my CPU gets. I suggest you try the 3.17.6 kernel from the  archive and see.
Also, there is a "Fan Running at Full Speed with 3.18.1+" bug report on the kernel bugzilla, but it seems that it takes time to push the patches.
