ath10k wifi firmware crash

I just got a new laptop that has a killer n1525 m.2 wifi/bluetooth card in it and I'm not having any luck getting it going. I figure I ask here in case anyone has any suggestions before I chuck it in favor of ordering an Intel 7260 AC. The card is shown as follows in lspci:

lspci -nnn|grep -i atheros
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [168c:003e] (rev 20)

When I first start the computer, dmesg shows the following:

When I try to connect to a wifi network, I get the following in dmesg showing a firmware crash:

Re: ath10k wifi firmware crash

I have similar issues with the exact same card. It was actually working fine(aside from the bluetooth which just seems to be busted) a few months ago with the firmware_ath10k package from the AUR. Recently it just refuses to connect to any WPA2enterprise access point. I'm on the same kernel as well.

This is what dmesg gives me with multiple attempts at trying to connect to a WPA2 network.

Re: ath10k wifi firmware crash

I gave up and purchased an Intel 7265 AC m.2 wifi card for my laptop last night, bluetooth and wifi both working fine with that now.

If your

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

result shows the same card, you are using the wrong firmware-?.bin as the firmware you have is for the QCA6164 card [168c:0041]

Either way you should

echo "options ath10k_core skip_otp=Y" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath10k_core.conf

Reboot

Re: ath10k wifi firmware crash

I have this same card in my MSI GS40.  There are a few things I noticed that I needed to get it to work.

1. I couldn't get NetworkManager to work properly so I use auto connect service provided by systemd
so along with:

pacman -S iw wpa_supplicant dialog

I also used:

sudo pacman -S wpa_actiond
systemctl enable netctl-auto@wlp61s0.service

Just change wlp61s0 to whatever your "iw dev" reports.

I also had to add two lines to my wireless profiles in /etc/netctl:

DHCPClient='dhclient'
ForceConnect=yes

2. I noticed that 5G networks (or at least my 5G network... possibly related to something else though) crash the firmware as you have noted above.  If you switch to the lower frequency wifi it may work for you.

EDIT: 5G crash has been fixed if you update from pacman.

The bluetooth issue is a known issue apparently the vendor created a name collision with an older card.

See here and here.

I once again see another firmware crash, only this time on shutdown.  It just started happening after performing a system wide upgrade with pacman -Syu.

uname -r reports that I am now at 4.6.1-2-ARCH
