Kernel issues

Hello Arch Linux masters!

It seems there are issues with kernel being able to successfully/correctly talk to many hardware components on my Asus laptop, the fan is always on full blast and any attempt to switch to nvidia from an intel GPU the system always failed. After a long time of researching the forums and wiki to fix these individual issues I eventually gave up as everything I found would not work.

After having taken a little while breather I decided to give installing Arch another go. I started with giving this a completely fresh install. My steps to producing the kernel error:

  • Download the latest archlinux ISO (currently archlinux-2016.06.01-dual)

  • Boot laptop from the disk

  • Selected x86_64

  • Command line booted fine without any errors

  • Then I entered the command "shutdown now" to turn off the laptop

The error shows:

This version of archlinux appears to be giving the same issues as my last install. I do not want to go through the process of partitioning and installing KDE on my laptop again knowing there will be issues with it not using the correct GPU and the fan going full blast.

The version of archlinux I am running: archlinux-2016.06.01-dual
Laptop specs:
CPU: Intel i7-6700HQ
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M
RAM: 16GB

I've been looking around for a long time now through multiple threads and the archlinux wiki but cannot find anything that matches this issue. My apologies if there is a duplicate out there but for the life of me I cannot seem to find any fix for this. If you require any more information at all, I will be more than happy to supply it.

Have you read the Arch Wiki?

Nothing happened between the two, it simply gives that error after booting in from a fresh ISO and performing a shutdown. The error still appears with the -hP (halt and power) flags, though that does shut down the computer quickly after those errors are displayed. Are those errors I was getting normal?

I wouldn't call any errors 'normal'. However if you only get those errors when shutting down from install media, they are probably not critical, as in they wouldn't prevent you from installing / running arch.
Also, fixing the error on install media isn't trivial task, as you can't change the configuration easily.

You could just go ahead to install, and see if the errors persist after installation. If they do, there are various things you could try to get rid of them.

Hello @numb3rz!

I share your pain with the hybrid graphics related issues on Arch.  I too had tried several different solutions ranging from the PRIME, NVIDIA, IntelGraphics, Bumblebee, and other Hybrid Graphics related wiki pages.  I also tried solutions I found on stackexchange, the Arch Forums, and many other results from google searches.

It looks like the main take away is that some of these Nvidia hybrid cards are still pretty new and don't have all the kinks worked out just yet. Throw in the Skylake processors and such and you get even more new hardware issues.

I was finally able to resolve my situation, however, and I have some information on how I fixed it on this thread.

I would get similar results as you are seeing prior to doing this, however, I have seen sooooo many different variations of the problem with different hardware that it is hard to keep track.

I noticed some more recent bug reports on the Bumblebee project seemed interesting.  You may want to also have a look here.

I hope you get your situation resolved.

My GPU is the GTX 970M.

If you've done nothing between the two, nothing has changed. Your system appears to be screwed up. Since nothing has been changed, why expect it to operate differently?

Under normal conditions, "poweroff" is the default for "shutdown". Redundancies won't alter much of anything.

No.


The symptoms you describe are, depending the the machine and the firmware, usually associated with mobo/firmware issues or a missing/corrupted operating system- again, depending on the design of the machine at hand.


Were it me, and the health of the OS and/or kernel were in question, I would run the archiso and install, at least up to the first reboot- before creating users, permissions, installing DM, DE, etc. At a minimum, I would re-partition (likely not necessary but for the amount of effort involved, I'd do it) and re-format. Then see if anything changes. However, IMHO, anything short of running the archiso to its intended conclusion is simply asking for problems. In other words, you may find yourself "tripping over mouse turds" and "chasing ghosts".

If, after all this, fans were blowing at full speed from power-on, I'd be looking at flashing the BIOS with the current version (if applicable). Short of this, I'd reset the firmware to default settings. Otherwise possible hardware/firmware issues may be the problem...or even Asus compatibility considerations for that matter. Only you can sort it out.

Once you have a viable OS -one in which you have confidence- the questions surrounding IGP and DGP integration (hybrid graphics) come into play.

BTW, Is this a dual boot?

numb3rz here's a link that may put things into perspective for folks like yourself and matthew_TKA, who face hybrid graphics integration problems. As matthew_TKA suggests, until Arch and Linux collectively or singularly arrive at a definitive answer, you may very well be left with no recourse other than to hack and patch your way through problems arising from the combination of hybrid graphics and Arch Linux.

Thanks a ton for your help guys! I never noticed these other links for the hybrid graphics issues and will definitely try them out soon. I do not plan on making this a dual boot system as I plan to only use Arch. I'm transitioning over from Mint as I really enjoy the idea of building everything from near scratch. Though I am not so sure the fan issue is to do with the firmware as Mint is able to talk to them just fine.

I'll be away until Monday/Tuesday, but I'll update here after installing and trying out the fixes you've supplied for the GPU.

Alright so I managed to squeeze some time in for this just before leaving for the weekend, I've followed this guide (including SDDM steps): https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

So far it seems my excessive fan blowing has been resolved, but I cannot seem to get KDE plasma 5 running even while installed. I am attempting to start the GUI with "systemctl enable sddm", I get taken to a blank page and cannot seem to do anything else whilst I am there. I'm choosing to keep SDDM disabled by default for the time being until I know I will get successfully booted into KDE when I start the computer, unless there is a better way of doing this?
