PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

Hi,

I’ve been trying to do a VGA Passthrough these last two days with no avail.
IOMMU only returns “[0.000000] DMAR: IOMMU enabled” without any extra information, and the “iommu_groups” folder is completely empty.
My processor and motherboard are both compatible with IOMMU and VT-x, but my GPU isn’t compatible with UEFI. Is that the problem, or am I missing a step?

Thanks.

Specs:
HP Pavilion p6-2017es
Mobo: H-CUPERTINO2-H61-uA TX (Cupertino2) → Intel H61
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600
RAM: 6 GB DDR3
Dedicated GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 530 2 GB
Integrated GPU: Intel® HD Graphics 2000

Re: PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

My processor and motherboard are both compatible with IOMMU and VT-x

If that's correct pci passthrough won't work as it requires Intel VT-d or AMD-VI .

please post lscpu output

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

That CPU should support VT-d. Do you have VT-d enabled in your BIOS?
Also, do you have intel_iommu=on in your kernel arguments?

Yes, absolutely. And I already added the option in the kernel boot parameters. But after the boot all I get is:

$ dmesg|grep -e DMAR -e IOMMU
[0.000000] DMAR: IOMMU enabled

And I don't see any IOMMU groups or anything related.

Re: PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

What brand and model is your motherboard ?

Are you using latest firmware for it ?

please post full dmesg .

The motherboard is a H-CUPERTINO2-H61-uA TX (Cupertino2); made by Foxconn. It has an Intel H61 chipset inside. Here's the info: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ … -c03057185
Yes, everything is updated.

And here's the full dmesg:

Re: PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

Ah wait that chipset may not support VT-d afaik.

EDIT: http://ark.intel.com/products/52806/Intel-BD82H61-PCH
"Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) ‡:     No"
Seems it may depend on the vendor whether it really isn't though.

Re: PCI passthrough with an unsupported GPU

That motherboard definitely doesn't support VT-d.

The disclaimer on the Intel site is because even if a chipset does support VT-d the manufacturer also has to build support into the motherboard.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan
