[SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

Hey guys, got some issues with my nvidia drivers, hope someone can help me.

To start off, here is my system specs:

gideon@gideon-arch
OS: Arch Linux
Kernel: x86_64 Linux 4.6.2-1-ARCH
Uptime: 16m
Packages: 1179
Shell: bash 4.3.42
Resolution: 2560x1440
WM: bspwm
GTK Theme: ASN [GTK2/3]
Icon Theme: Numix-Bevel
Font: Open Sans 10
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K CPU @ 3.6GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 970
RAM: 1222MiB / 15879MiB

I updated my system yesterday by doing

sudo pacman -Syu

and after that, my games wasnt performing as it should. I got about 40fps less than usual. My Nvidia drivers updated from the previous version 35?.?? to the latest version 367.27 which I have installed now.

I used to get 60fps + in Shadow of mordor, now I get 10.
I used to get 100fps + in minecraft, now I get between 10 - 20.

So obviously, something is wrong. I tried downgrading to a previous version by using

sudo pacman -U nvidia-previous-version-from-cache

but this did not work. So I was desperate and uninstalled the nvidia drivers and then switched off my display manager and installed the older proprietary drivers from nvidias website. This installed fine, however, when I rebooted, the display manager didnt even launch and I received a classical "No Signal" message from my monitor. Great. So I did what any sane person would do in that situation and rebooted with a arch livecd , chrooted into the os, uninstalled the propriatery drivers and reinstalled the latest nvidia drivers.

After this, the O/s booted again, however, I have more problem now. At the moment, opengl is not working as expected, e.g.:

compton is not showing my terminal windows as transparent, as it used to.
minecraft does not launch and craches.

I have run out of options and hope someone can help me.

EDIT:

Ok, so one thing is sorted out. I was able to fix all the opengl issues, but other issues are still present.

I fixed the error messages I got from glxinfo and glxgears by following this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1613261

So I did:

sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libGL*

and there was about 5 "error: no owner messages", but luckily, all the version numbers were the same. So I delete the files that said no owner and reinstalled the following:
lib32-nvidia-libgl
nvidia-libgl
nvidia
nvidia-utils
lib32-nvidia-utils

I also checked :

ls /usr/lib/libGL* -lh

And it seemed that everything was properly linked, so then I rebooted.

After reboot, my glxgears and glxinfo works without errors, however, I still have things to sort our:

1 - I tested minecraft and it still seems a bit laggy and I'm getting low frames.
2 - Steam does not open and gives the following output :

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ steam
Running Steam on arch rolling 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1465948

3 - vainfo gives an error:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

So, I beleive I am halfway there to fix the problem.

EDIT 2:

Ok, so fixed the vainfo bug by removing libva and installing libva-vdpau-driver (which also installs libva again).

Now vainfo outputs this:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_35
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
vainfo: VA-API version: 0.39 (libva 1.7.0)
vainfo: Driver version: Splitted-Desktop Systems VDPAU backend for VA-API - 0.7.4
vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
      VAProfileMPEG2Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG2Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG4Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG4AdvancedSimple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Baseline :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264High :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Advanced :	VAEntrypointVLD

So thats fixed, now I still have to fix steam and the performance issues... I'm going to reboot now and see if anything changes.

EDIT 3:

OK, good news, after fixing the libva-vdpau-driver , minecraft performs good again and I can see a noticable difference in windows opening and minecraft loading times, youtube videos at full screen etc.

And my minecraft FPS is back at 60 - 100+ fps, so performance is looking good.

Now I just have to fix steam not opening. If I can fix steam, I can bench test some other games to test if its working as it should again ...

EDIT 4:

I think I know why steam isnt working. They say on the steam troubleshooting page that it's most likely to do with lib32 problems.

So just testing my 32bit opengl and found some issues, I believe if I fix this my problems will be gone.

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ glxinfo32 | grep OpenGL.
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (X_GLXCreateNewContext)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 85
Current serial number in output stream: 86
EDIT 5:

ok so steam is working now, performance is fast, however, when I benchtest "Shadow of Mordor", I get good frames but many textures do not load correctly.

So I went back to my /usr/lib and /usr/lib32/ directories and checked the entire directories for errors and found / removed the following:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib32/* | grep error

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ sudo rm /usr/lib/libvdpau_nvidia.so

And then I reinstalled everything that I fixed so far, and also included the 32bit version of the libva-vdpau-driver for 32bit applications that needed that. So it looks like this:

sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-libgl opencl-nvidia lib32-opencl-nvidia libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver

but to be safe, I installed in this order:

sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils

sudo pacman -S nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-libgl

sudo pacman -S opencl-nvidia lib32-opencl-nvidia

sudo pacman -S libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver

I'm restarting now and lets hope for the best...

EDIT 6:

Ok so after that, I opened steam and shadow of mordor still did not display all textures correctly, however, all the other games I have tested so far worked really good:

Minecraft runs smooth
Grid Autosport benchmark ran smooth on Ultra
Alien Isolation runs smooth on Ultra
7 days to day runs smooth on High

So I'm starting to think Shadow of mordor starting getting issues because of the new nvidia driver or because I was benchtesting the game while my drivers and dependencies were messed up.

But for now, I think were done here. Everything else is working as it should. I will check back in if I fix Shadow of mordor, but for now, Im happy, I can play all my other games again !

Thx @madpierre for also helping.

EDIT 7:

Hahaha !

Shadow of mordor has problems with latest nvidia drivers !!!

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/ … 36412.6909

So all my problems are solved !!

I am literally laughing out loud right now. Thx for all the help guys !

Assuming you aren't running a guest in a VM, here's my config for a GT-630:

local/libvdpau 1.1.1-2
    Nvidia VDPAU library

local/nvidia 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers for linux

local/nvidia-libgl 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers libraries symlinks

local/nvidia-settings 367.27-1
Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver

local/nvidia-utils 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

local/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.12-1 (xorg-drivers xorg)
Open Source 2D acceleration driver for nVidia cards

DE is Xfce4.

Looking at your post, I have VDPAU installed from nvidia-utils.

This is my output for vainfo:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

and no, Im not running a vm and no, I'm not running as guest.

I have also added myself to the video group as some people on gentoo forums suggested, but that didnt help at all.

Isnt the xf86-video-nouveau the display driver ? That would clash with my nvidia driver installed ... ?

No. It's an accelerator. I have no problems with it. Try it. If it doesn't work, remove it.

Did you remove opencl-nvidia 367.27-1 and did you reboot?

[Edit]

What's the output for

# lspci -v | grep VGA

Yes I did and I rebooted and I get all the same errors. However, as far as I know, nvidia blacklists the nouveau driver ?

The xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.12-1?

No. Since you know these things why ask for help. This configuration has worked and is working on four machines, one of which is quite old yet pushes a very large flat screen TV. No problems.

If my setup doesn't help, keep digging.

I'm just adding what I know. Thanks for your help so far. I'm not questioning your answers, I tried all of them, sadly, they did not work for me. All I know is that everything worked until I upgraded my nvidia drivers.

And I have tried other things. Just trying to get some other ideas. I dont see any other problems in the log and searching for the "X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)" results in threads that result in dead ends.

Will try some more options and let you know of any results.

As I said, keep digging and keep your mind open. That's important. Look around the forum. There's a lot of chatter similar to your issue. You might find a clue.

All the best,

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

Ok, so one thing is sorted out. I was able to fix all the opengl issues, but other issues are still present. (see edit or this message)

I fixed the error messages I got from glxinfo and glxgears by following this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1613261

So I did:

sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libGL*

and there was about 5 "error: no owner messages", but luckily, all the version numbers were the same. So I delete the files that said no owner and reinstalled the following:
lib32-nvidia-libgl
nvidia-libgl
nvidia
nvidia-utils
lib32-nvidia-utils

I also checked :

ls /usr/lib/libGL* -lh

And it seemed that everything was properly linked, so then I rebooted.

After reboot, my glxgears and glxinfo works without errors, however, I still have things to sort our:

1 - I tested minecraft and it still seems a bit laggy and I'm getting low frames.
2 - Steam does not open and gives the following output :

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ steam
Running Steam on arch rolling 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1465948

3 - vainfo gives an error:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

So, I beleive I am halfway there to fix the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

Ok, so fixed the vainfo bug by removing libva and installing libva-vdpau-driver (which also installs libva again).

Now vainfo outputs this:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_35
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
vainfo: VA-API version: 0.39 (libva 1.7.0)
vainfo: Driver version: Splitted-Desktop Systems VDPAU backend for VA-API - 0.7.4
vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
      VAProfileMPEG2Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG2Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG4Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG4AdvancedSimple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Baseline :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264High :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Simple :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Main :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileVC1Advanced :	VAEntrypointVLD

So thats fixed, now I still have to fix steam and the performance issues... I'm going to reboot now and see if anything changes.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

OK, good news, after fixing the libva-vdpau-driver , minecraft performs good again and I can see a noticeable difference in windows opening and minecraft loading times, YouTube videos at full screen etc.

And my minecraft FPS is back at 60 - 100+ fps, so performance is looking good.

Now I just have to fix steam not opening. If I can fix steam, I can bench test some other games to test if its working as it should again ...

I am still getting this problem where steam is hanging at this output:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ steam
Running Steam on arch rolling 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1465948)

Ok, so just testing my 32bit opengl and found some issues, I beleive if I fix this my problems will be gone.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

aha ! so I forgot when I was checking for errors

aka

sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libGL*

I forgot the lib32 directory as well, like so

sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib32/libGL*

so I did, and this was the result:

So I deleted the "error No package owned by" files, reinstalled lib32-nvidia-ligl and lib32-nvidia-utils.

Going to reboot now and test.

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected

ok so steam is working now, performance is fast, however, when I benchtest "Shadow of Mordor", I get good frames but many textures do not load correctly.

So I went back to my /usr/lib and /usr/lib32/ directories and checked the entire directories for errors and found / removed the following:

↳ gideon@gideon-arch ~ $ sudo pacman -Qo /usr/lib32/* | grep error
error: No package owns /usr/lib32/libcuda.so.361.45.11
error: No package owns /usr/lib32/libEGL_nvidia.so.361.45.11

And then I reinstalled everything that I fixed so far, and also included the 32bit version of the libva-vdpau-driver for 32bit applications that needed that. So it looks like this:

sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-libgl opencl-nvidia lib32-opencl-nvidia libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver

but to be safe, I installed in this order:

sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils

sudo pacman -S nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-libgl

sudo pacman -S opencl-nvidia lib32-opencl-nvidia

sudo pacman -S libva-vdpau-driver lib32-libva-vdpau-driver

I'm restarting now and lets hope for the best...

Re: [SOLVED] Graphics / Nvidia / Opengl not working as expected
