[solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

Hello,
I have a Santech T67 (based on a Clevo P640RE) with the following hardware:

CPU: i7-6700HQ (Intel HD 530)
GPU: nVidia GTX 970M
OS: Arch linux x64 with Gnome 3.20, testing enabled
Bumblebee: not installed
PRIME: not installed
nouveau: not installed
nVidia driver: the latest available from the official Arch linux repo

My problem is that if I set the system to use the nVidia card Gnome crashes and the message "Sorry, something blabla" shows up.

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/5-nvidia.conf
Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "intel"
    Inactive "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

PS: I can't install nvidia-libgl becase the only thing I get is a black screen without even being able to reach gdm. So I'm using mesa-libgl.

EDIT: solved by using only the intel card. I found a way to use the dGPU but the battery life is horrible.

Tell us where exactly you deviated from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus.

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

1) until v4 is released I can't use bumblebee
2) nouveau support for GM204 chipset is pathetic
3) with nvidia-libgl I get only the message mentioned on the first post (if you google it you'll see that other people had this problem too)
4) I deviated from the arch wiki because I have already tried that setup...and didn't work

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

Then at least take the time to post the actual error message. The one you provided isn't very helpful. I don't want to google myself, why Skylakes and bumblebee are supposed to be an issue. Help us help you.

The above outputs are with nvidia-libgl installed. If I use mesa-libgl instead of nvidia-libgl I reach the warning page "oh no, something went wrong blabla". Otherwise, only a black screen.

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

I'm still trying to understand why this happens. I have a Clevo board with a 970m myself (different board, though).

Could you please try to...

1. ... disable GDM and start Gnome via xinit/startx and rule out GDM?
2) ... run a simple WM (Openbox is popular) via xinit/startx, so we can get a possible Gnome bug out of the way.

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

So the outcome is:

1) if gdm disabled && nvidia-libgl installed && xinitrc => can use nvidia card smile
2) if gdm disabled && nvidia-libgl installed && xinitrc => can't use intel card sad
3) if gdm enabled && mesa-libgl => can use intel card smile
4) if gdm enabled && nvidia-libgl installed => can't use intel card sad

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

Okay, that's a bummer, but it doesn't surprise me. Could you maybe elaborate a bit, why Bumblebee doesn't work with your setup? I don't have a Skylake myself at the moment. A link maybe? We are probably able to figure out how to patch bumblebee for you (adapting the PKGBUILD, for example), so you can more or less simply keep it up to date until bumblebee with the fix you need goes stable.

I'm sort of interested in this, because I had been struggling with Optimus for almost a year until everything worked as I wanted. In fact, Schenker, a German shop built around custom Clevo systems, used to advertise Optimus as a great feature, but recently they explicitly advertise as a quality attribute how they gave up on Optimus.

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

With Optimus, from my understanding, you can't use the Intel iGPU at all for rendering unless you use Bumblebee.

With the Arch wiki guide for Optimus, did you try the simple xorg.conf (load modesetting, BusID for NVIDIA device section, and allowempty option), and the xinit config? Those are the only things I use (along with disabling nouveau) on my Optimus setup, and GNOME with GDM loads fine (on another distro anyway, haven't tried this yet on Arch).

Here is specifically what I do on Fedora: https://wiki.realmofespionage.xyz/distr … y_graphics but it should also work fine on Arch too (I don't know if the Arch driver install compiles the kernel module or not automatically; it doesn't on Fedora until next boot which is why I call it manually before that point with akmods).

Re: [solved] nvidia card doesn't work on optimus laptop

I have the same processor i6700hq and the same card as you 970m. I use Gnome shell. You need to use the closed source Nvidia drivers + bumblebee. GDM doesn't work on nouveau + bumblebee.
