openconnect: A TLS fatal alert has been received. (gnutls problem?)

For almost 2 years, I have been successfully connecting to a university vpn using

 openconnect xxx.xxx.xxx.ac.uk

after which I was prompted for my ID and password.

Within the last few weeks or so, I am immediately and always met with the following error

 POST https://xxx.xxx.xxx.ac.uk/
Attempting to connect to server xxx.xxx.xx.xxx:443
 SSL negotiation with xxx.xxx.xxx.ac.uk
SSL connection failure: A TLS fatal alert has been received.
Failed to open HTTPS connection to xxx.xxx.xxx.ac.uk
 Failed to obtain WebVPN cookie

I can't find much on what this means. The --verbose flag gives no more output either.

I suspect the TLS error might have something to do with gnutls.

In case it makes a difference, connecting to the same vpn using a OS X still works perfectly.

Can anyone shed light on what this problem might be caused by or how to solve it?

thank you,
