gsfonts: Can't find fonts since 20160531-3

Recently, package 'gsfonts' was upgraded 20150811-1 -> 20160531-3.
Then some old applications (e.g. 'xfontsel', 'tgif')  can't find these fonts.

In old gsfonts package, font files are *.pfb and placed in /usr/share/fonts/Type1
In new gsfonts package, font files are *.otf and placed in /usr/share/fonts/OTF

How can I use these fonts?

This upgrade was pretty annoying - Nimbus is rendered terribly for example.

here is my /etc/fonts/conf.d directory:

Yes, fontconfig recognizes these new gsfonts.
But xfontsel and tgif are legacy applications, and they
don't use fontconfig system.

xlsfonts displays new gsfonts, but xfontsel can not select them.
