Re: Poll: Favorite File Manager (GUI or CLI)

CLI
    [123] coreutils
    [57] ranger
    [29] Midnight Commander
    [6] vifm

    [1] Konqueror
    [1] Enlightenment File Manager
    [1] muCommander
    [1] Double Commander

I do something like 90% Ranger, >5% Coreutils + unison, rsync and <5% whatever-gui-that-launches-and-has-thumbnails wink
As folders are a core part of my workflow I couldn't be happy with just Coreutils. I tend to jump/copy-paste/launch the information I need way faster with ranger than with any gui. I ought to the guys who first posted some ranger keystrokes in Arch wiki and to the devs. BTW I believe the AUTHORS file is missing in the Arch community package.

I'm including "tree" in coreutils even though it isn't actually part of it. I also use Midnight Commander occasionally, but not enough to vote for it.

I use much coreutils but I do not count them as a filemanager. I use gqview's file management capabilities for moving and deleting images.

Re: Poll: Favorite File Manager (GUI or CLI)

Why is the the category called CLI when there's TUI programs in it?

Probably because the CLI category would then contain two entries? tongue Anyway I don't think people would mind changing the category name to "CLI/TUI".

Re: Poll: Favorite File Manager (GUI or CLI)

But are any of these programs actually any good? cool
So maybe in addition to just voting for your favourite type of poison, also mention if you're 'happy'/content with your choices, or if you're more in the 'this will do'/'better for me then the rest' camp??
Personally, I thinks I've tried nearly every entry on that list, and especially in the GUI department, to me they all feel so incredibly slow and clunky, and this holds true even on a mostly empty filesystem running off a ssd... The Win95 shell running on a 200Mhz pentium feels more responsive in most cases, and you don't want to know the age of the underlying hdd...

Re: Poll: Favorite File Manager (GUI or CLI)

Decide what you expect from a filemanager, then look again.

I like Orthodox File Managers and favor reliability and functionality over speed.

For Konsole that narrows things down to 1 choice , Midnight Commander . For graphical environments there are more options.

People that are not familiar with OFMs will make different choices.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

There are more choises than Midnight Commander for terminal usage as well. I am using vifm and I know Ranger is another option.

Also are you sure "Konsole" is used inside a terminal window?

Re: Poll: Favorite File Manager (GUI or CLI)

I should have used "console environment" or similar instead of Konsole.

Looked up Ranger & vifm and they indeed qualify as OFM.
Thanks for the tip, bstaletic.

I love vifm because of the vi bindings, ex mode, and also because I can use, for instance, sshfs by just creating an empty file with my ssh prefs inside, virtually creating a new "folder" type for each fuse entry

I like nemo because it 'just works' no matter what WM/DE I'm using, unlike, say, Nautilus, that depends heavily on Gnome being loaded for extra features
