AMD IOMMU Dilemma

Hi all,

can anyone help me with the following dilemma? This text is extracted from the kernel parameters documentation list.

amd_iommu=    [HW,X86-64]
            Pass parameters to the AMD IOMMU driver in the system.
            Possible values are:
            fullflush - enable flushing of IO/TLB entries when
                    they are unmapped. Otherwise they are
                    flushed before they will be reused, which
                    is a lot of faster
            off      - do not initialize any AMD IOMMU found in
                    the system
            force_isolation - Force device isolation for all
                      devices. The IOMMU driver is not
                      allowed anymore to lift isolation
                      requirements as needed. This option
                      does not override iommu=pt

So amd_iommu has only these possible values. Yet how is it that every VGA passthrough / IOMMU enable guide are suggesting to use the amd_iommu=on option. From what I can see that is only valid for intel_iommu=on.

I guess for AMD platform the only thing that helps from the performance point of view is iommu=pt ?

AFAIK if IOMMU /  AMD-Vi is correctly enabled in the bios ( Mobo and processor ofcourse need to support it) you don't need any kernel parameter .

(Since IOMMU v1 was introduced, almost all AMD procs usedit in 64bit mode, so AMD IOMMU is a lot more mature then intel iommu )
please post lscpu and full dmesg .

There's probably a low-level misconfiguration in your system.

I suggest removing the amd_iommu and iommu parameters for the time being.

Your motherboard appears to be a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 .
In the advanced Bios features of your firmware , check whether both virtualization and IOMMU are enabled.


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

OK, that's a bit weird. I will try without the amd_iommu and iommu settings and post the result. In the MB BIOS both SVM and IOMMU are enabled. These are the only 2 Virtualization options available.

P.S.: That explains the shitty I/O performance that I had trouble debugging also smile. Didn't know that the AMD-Vi should appear under Virtualization as well. Thanks!

EDIT 2: I've actually disabled SVM from the BIOS and it doesn't change anything on the OS level? Does it need some special configuration in Arch? Or could it be just a broken BIOS?

Buggy motherboard or buggy Bios .

It seems Gigabyte distinguishes between 6 hardware revisions for the GA- 990FXA-UD3 : rev 1.0, 1.1 ,1.2 , 3.0, 4.0 and 4.1 .
andreigrig, which HW revision do you have and are you running latest bios for it ?

I am having the 3.0. I have used for some time the FDk which was in a BETA state. But as of last week I have downgraded to the latest stable FC BIOS. Still no change. It seems to work though since I can pass through my VGA card. Not sure about the performance impact though.
