I just wanted to say that I too have an XPS 13 9343 with Antergos running on it but re-compiling the kernel with the CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE flag set did the trick for me so Antergos is not necessarily to blame.

OK. Good to know. Seems like we need someone with more Linux sound experiance to solve chiral's problem.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

After have spent some time with a linux 4.4.1-2 built w/ the OVERRIDE option enabled, today I switched to the core's 4.4.3-1. After 2 cold boots audio was working flawless, the microphone at default is not working. However, if I open pavucontrol while the microphone is active (e.g. during a skype call) and in the Input Devices tab I toggle Main Microphone -> Handset Microphone -> Main Microphone again, the device starts working well. Right now, this is the only audio issue still present on my xps13 9343 (bios A7).

When you say flawless, do you mean you do not have a popping noise if you plugin a headphone in the 3.5mm jack?

I never noticed any noise honestly on my xps13, just tried with two headphones.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

Well it is a periodic popping noising that happens when plugging a headphone while no audio is playing. It is pretty annoying and the only solution I've seen till now would be to go back to HDA sound instead of I2S. Since you said you sound is flawless perhaps you don't have this issue while using I2S mode for sound, which I think you do from the output of aplay -l you list above. Would you be able to confirm that?

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

I have a Dell XPS 13 (2015, model 9343, bios A07). My model is that with Intel i7 processor, 3200 x 1800 resolution, touchscreen and Broadcom wireless.

cribari@darwin4 ~ $ dmesg | grep "XPS 13"
[ 0.000000] DMI: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9343/0310JH, BIOS A07 11/11/2015

I've been having problems with I2S sound since kernel 4.4. In a nutshell, I2S audio works for a while and the crashes. At that point, dmesg informs:

[24294.494682] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: error: audio DSP boot timeout IPCD 0x0 IPCX 0x0
[24294.811357] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: ipc: --message timeout-- ipcx 0x83000000 isr 0x00000000 ipcd 0x00000000 imrx 0x7fff0000
[24294.811360] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: error: stream commit failed
[24294.811375] haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: ASoC: haswell-pcm-audio hw params failed: -110

In order to have audio, I am having to compile my kernels with

CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y

My problems are described in this bug report. Is anyone else having similar problems?

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

Same model with same BIOS version, just did a reboot after a month and launch the new kernel 4.6.3, now sound works no more. Guess we have to wait some fix from the upstream.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

Just installed linux-lts kernel, which works well for the moment, I think I will stick to it until this problem is properly solved

Still have a popping sound when sound is not playing. At least everything works remotely ok now.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

Evin, when using linux-lts kernel do you know if it is using I2S sound? Or linux-lts uses HDA sound? Another question: If you plug a headphone in the phone jack, do you hear a popping noise when no audio is being played while using the linux-lts kernel? Thanks.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

Has anyone come up with a solution to the 'popping'? This has been going on for quite some time now.

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

after patiently waiting 10 months in I2S mode with popping noises and  non-working external microphone I am now back on HDA..was hoping we'd see a solution to this issue but i guess i'll run a custom compiled kernel with the CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y flag to force HDA mode until the I2S mode in the linux kernel is fixed..

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

So, no-go on 4.8.x either? I'm going to go with the same route as Bastian now - I was hoping I wouldn't have to, but looks like there's little choice left.

So does anyone know if this is also [still] a problem on Ubuntu? I imagine it shouldn't be since it's the officially supported distribution for the developer edition...

Re: Yet another XPS 13 9343 sound issue

While the wiki page says that the sound issues should be resolved in 4.8., my understanding is that it just so happens that that version is a bit problematic for reasons completely unrelated to audio. Others have had issues and when I tried booting 4.8.2, I never made it past the login screen. Apparently according to Linus himself some "buggy crap" made it to 4.8. Therefore, I've just stayed on 4.7. with CONFIG_ACPI_REV_OVERRIDE_POSSIBLE=y and everything's been fine.
