Network manager is failing to start - help...

I've had to reboot my machine (Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon), and now NetworkManager won't start:

    sudo systemctl start NetworkManager.service

produces

Job for NetworkManager.service failed because the control process exited with error code
See "systemctl status NetworkManager.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

Well, jounalctl -xe tells me that the service has "Failed with result 'start-limit-hit'

I know that the networking hardware is working, because I can scan with iw.  I'm quite mystified, because up until a few hours ago, NetworkManager has always just worked with no issues.  I've tried logging into the network with wpa_supplicant, with no success so far.

Any ideas?  My installation is severely crippled without networking.

Many thanks!
