Can't run anything as root with gksu

I been unable to run anything with gksu for several months (bleachbit, etc).     Following this thread:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=220410  I was able to input my password after making the suggested modifications to gksu-properties (post #3)  However I then would get this error message:

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyCannot open display:

I'm running gnome on Xorg (as far as I know--I have exec gnome-session in my .xinitrc file) and not under wayland.

Are you able to open GUI applications without gksu?
Have you set your hostname?

Yes, for example, Bleachbit will open when run as non-root.

And I have set my hostname.

as far as I know

maybe look at the output of

loginctl session-status

There's apparently no DISPLAY exported  what smells a hell lot like wayland.
