OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Greetings,
I want to fully enable my graphics card on my laptop, but fail.
Per default, the mesa drivers took care of everything, but ofc I did not have access to CUDA

What I did:
- installed cuda, nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-libgl lib32-mesa-demos libva-vdpau-driver
(removed the mesa pendants for libgl)
-  systemctl enable nvidia-persistenced.service
-  reboot

The problem:
it seems like the card is active
- I can compile and run the cuda vectoradd sample
- nvidia nsight detects it on creating a new project
- display ("benchmarl": resizing floating window of intellij) seems more responsive

but I don't have opengl as
- compton will fail with glx_init(): No GLX extension.
- inxi -Gx outputs

Graphics: Card-1: Intel HD Graphics 520 bus-ID: 00:02.0

libva info: VA-API version 0.39.4
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns -1
libva error: va_getDriverName() failed with unknown libva error,driver_name=(null)
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

What I tried
- many reinstalls
- bumblebee (cuda was messy and I don't mind the card to be always on)
- 20-nvidia.conf which results in a non bootable state, like described here, but unfortunately without a solution
(also with the startup script for my display manager LightDM as described here)
Packages are all completely updated.

I hope, someone can help me, or at least poke me in the right direction as I'm not an expert in this regime and slowly but surely out of ideas.

Greetings
Flo

Re: OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Do you have any logs? especially xorg logs

Re: OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Just for the what I tried part: You are aware that only adjusting your lightdm conf will not be enough and you have to have xorg configuration as specified further up in that same article? But yeah logs  would be nice

Yeah, sorry, of course. Just saw the other thread with a very similar Problem which got posted while I was writing.

From my understanding it gets sour at 10.380

@V1Del:
if you mean the

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
BusID "<BusID for NVIDIA device here>"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

then yes, I added that, too (with the inserted address of my nvidia card, in my case 06:00.0)

With your configuration file you are overriding file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
You must add 'ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"' in your Device section, or you can try with the Device section removed.

Re: OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Ah, thanks for the info!
So, I had some time for rambling around, but no real progress. (there's a tldr at the end smile)

Unfortunately, I tried the ModulePath like you described, i.e.

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:06:00:0"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

but he complains that ModulePath is no valid Key, i.e.

Then I tried a section "Files" i gathered whilst googling (sorry, don't have the link anymore)

Section "Module"

Section "Files"

which resulted in

(sorry, this post got very long)

TLDR
The ModulePath kinda works, but then the nvidia module is not found anymore.

I was also searching the bios switch for the internal card but did not find anything even remotely close.

Re: OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Slightly off topic but it seems strange to me that this system is failing with what at least in one configuration was a standard NVIDIA_Optimus configuration as recommended on the wiki and seems to still work as proven here.

Re: OpenGL refusing to work with Quadro M500M on Lenovo P50s [SOLVED]

Thanks guys!
The following config did the trick:

Section "Module"
    Load "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg,/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:06:00:0"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

giving me
