[SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

Hi all,
Ater my last system upgrade (though I am not 100% sure it started at this time), which was one week before - I observe very strange behaviour in Firefox.

All pages work fine, but some not.
Good example is "www.ibm.com". When I try to open it I see this;

Server not found
Firefox can’t find the server at www.ibm.com.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

In the beginning I thought it might be that IBM page is redirecting me to HTTPS , but bbs.archlinux.org is also HTTPS and is working fine (this post is evidence for it).

I have no clue what can be the issue.

I tried to work with traceroute , but it does not work for www.ibm.com though it works fine for google page. See this:

[root@zotac rafal]# traceroute www.ibm.com
www.ibm.com: Name or service not known
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg `www.ibm.com' on position 1 (argc 1)

[root@zotac rafal]# traceroute google.com

help posted here https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Unblock-Firefox-from-connecting/Server-Not-Found-Troubleshoot-connection-problems/ta-p/3043#w_cannot-load-websites-after-updating-firefox does not help.
I have deleted CACHE and did what is described on that page.

I do not think Firewall can be an issue. I am using ufw and when I stop it I see the same issue.

what can be a root cause?

regards
Rafal

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

I need to add that I have second PC in the same network. It also has ARCHLINUX and Firefox and there everything works fine.
I can open IBM page without issues.

Here what traceroute shows me on that PC

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

Almost sure is a problem about DNS configuration, check your /etc/resolv.conf or resolvconf settings if you use it, if it's not a DNS problem set 'No Proxy' on Firefox network settings (the default value)

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

thanks for first reply ;-)
the strange thing is that one day after I created this post it worked fine and now is again not working.
I will also try to install Opera and check if there it will work (I want to exclude wrong settings in Firefox or bug in Firefox).
Actually apart of the full system upgrade the only software I installed was downloaded from AUR and it was NOIP (noip-2.1.9-7-i686.pkg.tar.xz). I am using it to update my dynamic IP.
Apart of it I have played a little bit with UFW since I wanted to add some rules to my server to allow SSH and VNV from another local computer.

the only thing I see in /etc/resolv.conf is this:

# Generated by resolvconf
nameserver 192.168.1.1

192.168.1.1 is IP of my local router.
Via this router I connect to the internet and I do not see any issues on other PC's.

In Firefox I have "Use system proxy settings". Now I will change it and test.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

with "No proxy" same issue. No difference.

When I try in Opera the error says something about DNS issue.
The question is where I can check it?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

what I did is this:

I have disabled NOIP program like this:

systemctl disable noip2

I have restarted PC and now it works ?!
Entries in /etc/resolv.conf  are same as before.

But as I said before - one day it also worked though I have not changed anything.
I will obesrve system behaviour and if it works fine I will post update here.

I do not know why NOIP should influence connection to some pages (it didn't worked only for some), but maybe some people who know more can explain it. Maybe the fact that it works now is simply random.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox - Server Not Found

I can confirm that after I disabled noip2 service I have not seen the error again.
I mark this thread as solved
