System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Hi,

During normal work use -- browsers, Sublime, file manager etc, my laptop hanged.

My kernel is: 4.9.25-1-lts #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux

Logs showed the following, kindly see if there is something I should be doing so this can be avoided:

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

FIRTS OFF: secure all your really important data.

Next check the health condition of your disk: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/S.M.A.R.T. - either there's a bug in ext4 or your disk is dying.
Also post a complete dmesg, look out for failed paging requests (RAM issue rather than disk one or kernel bug)

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Thanks Jason. Apologies.

The result of short S.M.A.R.T. test:

# smartctl -H /dev/sda

smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [x86_64-linux-4.9.25-1-lts] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

I've started the 'long' test and will post results in couple of hours.

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Dump

smartctl -x /dev/sda

for present statistics.

dmesg has no problem indications but is also from a freshly booted system.
Dump it again after some uptime.

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Disk and connection look healthy, so it's indeed (rather) either a kernel bug or a memory issue.

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Thank you seth, I installed the Intel microcode, rebooted and it's working:

dmesg | grep microcode
[ 0.000000] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x1f, date = 2016-04-01
[ 1.555241] microcode: sig=0x40651, pf=0x40, revision=0x1f
[ 1.555429] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.01 <tigran@aivazian.fsnet.co.uk>, Peter Oruba

Only thing left now is I post dmesg output after a decent uptime.

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

[54840.898391] ata1: SError: { PHYRdyChg CommWake }

https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/L … _expansion

Typically a bad power or sata cable - but that's less likely on a notebook, resp. finding the connection weakness could turn out to be a problem.
Check "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" to figure which device ata1 is (scsi0, the counting is off by one because otherwise it would be too easy ;-)
If you're "lucky" it's some DvD drive with a broken disk inside, but given your perceptions, it's likely your hard disk :-(

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Thank you seth. I guess I better start looking for new hard disks :-|

The output of 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' is:

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: ATA Model: ST750LM022 HN-M7 Rev: 0002
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05

Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-RAM UJ8D2Q Rev: 1.10
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

It's the hard disk.
This *can* just indicate a S3 resume (and then it's harmless), but also *can* indicate a wonky disk connection and then you get I/O errors (notably since the disk could remain unconnected for a random amount of time)

If those error messages pop up more often and notably in correlation with the hangs/freezes (ie. no freeze without but after such messages) you should seek to fix that.
This unfortunately means to open the notebook and inspect the connections - don't do that on your own if you haven't before and/or check whether there're youtube videos about eg. replacing the disk in that notebook model, so you've seen what expects you before and how you access internals w/o breaking latches or such ... :-/

Maybe check the behavior with the mainline kernel (not lts) first (that's far less troublesome and hey, maybe there's just a bug in the ext4 kernel module...)

Re: System Hang -- kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:508!

Thank you Seth, really appreciate it.

I'll keep an eye on the freezes and check logs to make sure, and switch to non-lts kernel. Let's see.
