Re: Laptops which run Arch

Just bought an Asus Zenbook q324ua (UX360ua). 2-in-1

i7-7500u 3.5GHz 15W 4MB (amazing performance)
Intel HD 620 (open source driver working perfectly)
16GB DDR3L 1866MHz
512GB Micron 1100 SATAIII m.2 SSD (plenty fast enough ~450-500MB/s R/W sequential)
13.3" 1080 IPS LED 10 point touch (works out-of-box)
Intel 8260 dual band ac wifi (works out-of-box)
2.8lbs, .6" thick, Aluminum body, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, webcam, sd reader, usb-c (3.0 unfortunately), hdmi, 2xusb3.0

Arch running with 4.9.11 as of this post. Using Cinnamon de (previously only used xfce but cinnamon works better on a laptop without too much extra fuss, and Cinnamon has come a long way since I last used it couple years ago) and everything seems to be working great! Lid sleep works, wifi has been flawless. Haven't tested card reader, webcam or fingerprint reader yet. Getting over 10 hours battery light usage on Arch! More testing and tweaking to do.

Edit: Webcam and card reader tested and working.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Given the length of the thread, probably already mentioend, but some that I've ran it on with no issues that aren't easily overcome, and documented in the wiki:

Dell XPS-12 9Q33
Dell Latitude E7x40
Dell Latitude E5x40
Dell Latitude E7x50
Dell Latitude E5x50
Dell Latitude E7x70
Dell Latitude E5x70
Lenovo Yoga 700 11
HP Stream 13 (although wireless is flaky, it does work)
HP 14-an013nr
HP Folio 1020G1 (not that anyone should ever get one, the touchpad is horrible in any and every OS I've ever ran on it, and that includes the Windows it was designed for)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have an Acer Aspire V3-574G-341P with Arch linux running on it. Specs are:

Intel Core i3-5005U 2 GHz Dual-core (2 Core™)
250 GB SSD Samsung 850Evo
12 GB DDR3L RAM
15. 6" FHD screen
IEEE 802.11ac Wireless [Atheros QCA6174]

Using Gnome 3 with 4.10.1-1-ARCH kernel. Except for Wifi and Bluetooth everything works fine. Wifi has slight issues with reconnection. And I was not able to configure bluetooth properly. Installed Blueman and other packages but bluetooth won't start up. Didn't try much either since I don't use it. Wifi shortcut to restart using Fn + F3 also doesn't work. Rest of the keys work fine.

Tested things:

  • Webcam

  • Audio

  • Backlight

  • Sleep

  • Funtion keys

  • DVD drive

Haven't tested card reader.

Let me know if anything else needs to be tested.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I just bought a Jumper EZBook 3 and I'm so glad with it. Almost of its hardware works out-of-the-box.

Working:

· Function keys
· Webcam
· Touchpad
· Backlight (it doesn't have keys but I can set it with plasma battery applet)
· Sleep
· Audio (internal one and headphones)
· MicroSD reader

Not working:
· WiFi (Arch recognizes it but no networks are shown). A dongle wifi is my workaround.
· Bluetooth. Arch doesn't recognize it.
· Microphone (I only get noise, but it detects my voice)

Not tested:
· miniHDMI output

There's no info on the web of this Chinese laptop so I expect it would be interesting smile.

Regards!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Xiaomi Notebook Air 13.3"  Core-i5 6200 with BIOS A06.  Just received it a couple of days ago from Hong Kong.

I should really test it more but it will take me a while to transition from my old laptop and wanted to share the information now for people who may be interested.

I was looking here prior to purchase and also saw one post on Reddit from a user running Arch Linux.   So far, no issues for me.

I think the WiFi is on the "slow" side but I also tested this with the Windows Chinese version it came with and it was slow there also.  The test that I ran was playing 4K videos on YouTube and sometimes it would buffer.  It was the speed and not the video-processing as I can see the data-progress and it was fine if I pause first to catch up.

With Bumblebee and nvidia drivers (per the Arch Wiki), the GPU was not recognized on Gnome desktop.  YouTube 4K Videos were "bad".  I removed Bumblebee and installed xorg-xrandr and all good now.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I've used a couple of laptops and helped my brother install it on his

Asus x550CA

Everything worked out of the box with this laptop, it was pretty nice for installation.

I would recommend using the libinput drivers for the track-pad.

[current]
ASUS ROG Strix GL702VM-DB74

most everything worked out of the box.  I'm currently trying to fix issues with the keyboard backlight not wanting to work,  the screen brightness works but only if you remap the Fn+F5/6 keys to something else,  and HDMI sound.

MSI cr620
as far as I know everything works out of the box - this is my brother's and he hasn't complained about anything.

Best of luck with school!

I have an HP 15-af131dx P1A95UA 15.6" Laptop that works wonderfully under Arch. The brightness, wifi (used to not always be the case but it works perfect now), GPU, CPU, whatever, all work now. Just like Ubuntu, if not, better!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

It has its own thread, but the Dell XPS 15 9560 is honestly one of the best laptops for using with Arch if you have the money. From my experience, almost everything worked out of the box, except for the gtx 1050, which was stuck on, wasting power, but couldn't be used with the nvidia package. Nvidia's 378 driver was broken and didn't detect it. lspci caused a hard lock. After installing nvidia-beta-dkms, bumblebee-git and bbswitch-dkms-git, everything works well and the battery is pretty great. Honestly, I had a much better experience fixing arch on it than windows. The synaptics driver works great, and the windows drivers all suck, especially the wifi.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

My Dell Inspiron 5558 runs Arch well. It was sold with Ubuntu and that's a good sign that a laptop is compatible with GNU/Linux drivers.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have an ASUS K501UW, I had arch for a few months now, I had a few problems with the graphics drivers but I fixed them in a few hours. Also on a fresh install I have to press Fn + F1 and then wake up the laptop to start the Wifi. Not sure why but not I don't have the same problem

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have a Chromebook, it s running Arch Linux flawlessly! I'm surprised on how good it runs! I m a little short of HDD as you imagine but other than that I m wonderfully in love with it too. I run xfce and it the younger brother of my desktop arch system.

Since I have Arch on it I m using it exponentially more then with the standard chrome OS. ( Which is not evil at all, just very limiting for me)

I had problems initiating the installation but I somehow solved and i using it to run a stable system, but trying to experiment what I would use on the desktop.
Thanks to it I properly learned the xorg and steam native installation.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I just picked up the new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2017. So far, everything works out of the box! I got the HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock wich worked out of the box. Windows wasn't picking it up. I just love arch for being so flexible!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Glad you asked; I use a HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx (I gave you the exact model, *you* Google the specs), running a not-really-that-much-base-anymore recent install of Arch, with Cinnamon as my DE. My hardware is rather old, and as such, pretty much everything is supported, with literally no driver problems to speak of. Only thing that doesn't work is the webcam (hardware failure).
