I have installed Arch 0.6. Thank you for an exellent distribution.
I tried to get the e1000 network driver working on 2.6.3 kernel but the system locks up
when I tried to get the network up.
However, the e1000 driver does work with the 2.4.25 kernel. I used exactly the same
configuration setting in both cases.
My configuration is:
rc.conf:
MODULES=(!usbserial !ide-scsi e1000)
lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
gateway="default gw 192.168.1.254"
ROUTES=(gateway)
modules.conf:
alias eth0 e1000

You didn't mention which NIC you are trying to support.
If this is for an Intel Pro/100 network connection, try the e100 module instead.

I have the Intel Pro/1000 CT chipset integrated onto my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-8KNXP).
I didn't try the e100 driver. Perhaps I should have?
Anyway, I am happy as I've got the e1000 driver working with the 2.4
kernel.
I thought that this information may benefit others trying to get the Intel
Gigabit cards working that they may like to hold off using the 2.6 kernels
until the driver has been updated.

I've used the e100 driver consistently for Intel Pro/100 network chipsets for both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels without incident.

Hi Win,
I have noticed that there has been an update on the e1000 driver that
is supposed to fix the system lock-up problem that I experienced plus
some other problems. See:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … eLog-2.6.4
I will try it out over the weekend.
You may be interested since the e100 driver has also been updated.

a suggestion: I saw you has the line "alias eth0 e1000" in modules.conf and in kernel 2.6 this goes in modprobe.conf. I also took the driver out of rc.conf. I am fighting the same sort of problem and this fixed the unable to load module error.

Hi maq.
I've just upgraded to kernel 2,6,4 today via the kernel26 package on my laptop. The e100 driver works fine. Thanks for the heads up.

Hey maq, I experience the exact same problem. My motherboard is the same as yours, and have lock up when trying to set up the network. I gave up with arch because of this issue, but then try gentoo with the same kernel and everything works fine. I guess they patched the kernel somehow.
Guest,
The e1000 driver for the 2.4.x kernel works fine. I mentioned in my
previous email the e1000 driver has been updated to fix the problem.
Have you tried the updated driver with the 2.6.4 kernel from Arch?
I guess that when you compiled gentoo you compiled the new driver.
I haven't had time yet to try out the new driver. A full time job and three
kids doesn't leave much time for anything else.
I'll let you know how I go.
Cheers,
Michael
