dns problem local/external

I am running a local dns with an internal sever I use for file sharing etc.
I want to be able to use my local dns and access file sharing services as well and surf the web comfortably at the same time.
My router is set to give primary dns as my local servers and secondary as google (4.2.2.2).

When I try to connect to my local server domain it automatically takes me offline from the net and vice versa.
So I can only use one at a time. I am using NetworkManager as my dhcp client. I have also tested systemd-networkd and netctl to no avail.. Even if I set ip/dns manually i have the same problem. What could be causing this?

Many thanks.

Re: dns problem local/external

Sounds like you've overlooked *routing*. What does this show:

ip route

Offline
