That's clearly what the error says.  Have you done so?

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

No, I didn't.

Grub is booted via EFI as per  http://ryangehrig.com/index.php/arch-li … k-air-2013

I guess, I should copy intel-ucode.img tor EFI System Partition as per wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode , right?

Does anyone has  any experience with that?

Then do so.

Ya' think.  I don't want to be (too much of) a smart ass, but why do you think the wiki is there.  It provides guidance on how to install and maintain an archlinux system.  I was suspecting this thread would ammount to directing you to a wiki page you just hadn't bothered to look up yet - but if you know it's there, why haven't you followed it?

Yes.  Everyone who has contributed to or followed that wiki page.

If you ever came across Arch installation on MacBook Air, you would think different smile

This site advice is the possibly  only way to have Arch on my hardware, which is  confirmed by many users in Mac Arch Wiki.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Well then good luck to you and piss off.

First there is a wiki page dedicated to installing on your hardware.  So I don't think different <insert sarcastic disingenous smile emoji here>.

While there are some pages dedicated to rare leaf packages that don't get much review, the bulk of our wiki, and certainly any core page about installation, microcode, and bootloaders get a wealth of review and updates.  They are the condensation of the best information this community has.  If you think this community doesn't have any good information so be it - but then don't come here asking for information! (hence the "piss off" QED).

Go ask that blog author what you should do about your crash.  Clearly they know better than anyone here.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Fixed, the course of action to take was clear from the first post even, and was then confirmed to be what you thought it would be by a member of the boards, with an added anecdote, that we do not condone third party guides, which we don't. This one in particular seems to be rather sane, and refers back to the official installation guide for all the crucial steps. (that said, I don't see anything in there that wouldn't be covered by the wiki, so no, it definitely isn't the only way to have Arch running...) The crucial steps do  include the fact that you should be setting up the microcode updates. And now you have an abundace of evidence on what you should do ( the kernel itself tells you, the wiki tells you, a senior member of the boards tells you and I'm not going to tell you any different) that you should be setting up your microcode updates. That much was clear by the third post and reinforced in the fourth. Instead of doing all of us (that includes you) the favor and following the documentation pointed to be the solution of your problem, you decided to single out a side remark to further discussion into a direction that has nothing to do with your problem. I hope you see that it is frustrating for everyone involved to have advice given with your best interest in mind  and instead of adhering it arguing in a direction that cannot possibly help you.

Trilby's reaction wasn't the most tactful and I hope we can leave this out as a one off incident and a warning.

To bring this back on track, refrain from further discussion/arguments that don't help a resolution of the problem. Follow the Microcode page, should the issue persist come back and post a new set of output as well as

dmesg

(in general post output in [ code ] tags) should the boot continue far enough to get a dmesg output. Any further post that wants to continue an unhelpful argument, will lead to closure of this thread.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

V1del,

I appreciate your input.

I'm in the middle of the project, and fast temporal fix was vital for me --  at least I can try standard solutions when I have time.

That's the solution, which let at least boot the system up:

When I added the parameter

intel_iommu=off

to the end of the linux line in GRUB, the system booted up to the fully (? ) working state.

If someone have an explanation, I'd be happy to listen.

And, here is the reference for the quick fix: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230115

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Yes that one also has a simple explanation, iommu wasn't turned on by default in earlier kernels and now it is, but apparently it isn't as broadly usable as initially hoped and you can use that parameter to disable it again. You should still enable microcode updates, as the firmware bug will not necessarily have a relation  and might lead to different kind of issues.

If you are happy with that resolution, please edit the initial post's title and mark the thread as [solved]

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

V1del,

Thank you for the explanation.

I would prefer to upgrade the microcode and report the results, therefore will leave the thread not closed for a while.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Hi all,

I have the same problem with roughly the same hardware (MacBook Air 2013).
Now, with

intel_iommu=off

the system boots up fine.
Instead, loading the microcode at boot does not seem to help. Is that the expected behavior?

Fixed, does the microcode solve the problem for you?

Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

It shouldn't, but the firmware bug mentioned as the first line, should not appear anymore (and should appear regardless of the iommu parameter, if you don't have the intel-ucode installed and applied) it's more of a 2 birds with one stone kind of thing, it is definitely good practice to enable microcode updates regardless of them being the cause for this issue. This issue in particular is indeed because of IOMMU and updating the microcode is something that should simply be done anyway.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Oh, I see. Thank you!

I guess my hardware is just incompatible with IOMMU and there is no other way around than to disable it.
Maybe the upstream decision of having it switched on by default was too "optimistic".

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

I installed intel-ucode package and re-generated GRUB through:

# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

It didn't help.

Here is

GRUB config is generated automatically. Does it make sense to try to generate it manually as per Microcode wiki?

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Dodosoft,

Macbook Air 2013 should be identical to 2014, to the best of my knowledge, in the context of Arch. What kind of installation did you use? Single or dual boot?

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

@Fixed it did help, just that the underlying issue has a different cause than initially assumed, which is why it is good to do both

If you pay close attention to the outputs you don't have

[ 0.000000] [Firmware Bug] TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x20 (or later)

anymore but instead

[    0.000000] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x20, date = 2017-01-27

which shows that that part of the error / log has been taken care of.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

V1del,

Thank you for nice explanation.

Well, I guess that we don't have the other choice other than keeping Grub loader line

intel_iommu=off

for unknown time.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

Vanja_z, you are welcome!

Do you have the same hardware -- MacBook Air? I am trying to understand if this issue is hardware-specific.

I started to get mouse frozen, when I'm using the touch pad. USB mouse works OK, though.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

I have also experienced a variant of this, but not getting traction

Backrground: Gigabyte z97x-ud7 th board.  At the end of the pacman - Syu update, which seemed to go ok, dkms update hung on the first of 12 items - zfs.

Re-running pacman-Syu said all up to date.

I tried to dkms autoinstall manually, but it stalled when looking for the spl directory.

Zfs is not controlling any of my boot, user or system partions.

The above may be unrelated, but I include this in case.

I rebooted and got the firmware error:

[ 0.0000000] [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled, due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x22 (or later)
:: running early hook [udev]
:: triggering uevents...
Waiting for 10seconds for device /dev/sda2...
ERROR: device '/dev/sda2' not found. Skipping fsck
:: mounting '/dev/sda2' on real root
mount: /new_root: no filesystem type specified.
You are now being dropped into an emergency shell.
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
[rootfs]#

No response from keyboard...

On reflection, trying to install each of the dkms items by hand separately would have been advisable.

I followed the microcode update wiki link, but I am certain I am missing something.

I was unable to get into any shell, but added

 initrd=/intel-ucode.img

in front of the start options after entering "e" at the boot menu.

This just resulted in:

 Failed to open file: intel-ucode.img
Trying to load files to higher address
Failed to open file: intel-ucode.img

I tried / and \, adding boot to the path, but to no avail.

Tried

 intel_iommu=off

with and without the intel-ucode.img initrd param. No dice.

How do I get the intel img in place, if this is in fact what I need to do?

Would I need to boot from a usb and chroot into my system to repair/install/load?

If not that, I would appreciate any advice to resolve this as currently my machine is a brick.

Second this, for most people

intel_iommu=off

and/or the intel-ucode update/installation or some combination of both seems to do the trick. For me it doesn't either.
Still getting

ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.XHC_.RHUB.HS11] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170531/dswload-210)
ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20170531/psobject-252)

starting version 234
arch: clean, 886941/25296896 files, 36237838/101187584 blocks

Just as you, I'm also out of ideas.

edit: Oops. Using amdgpu, just randomly went over the article seeing this:

Also, since kernel 4.13, adding the amdgpu.si_support=1 or amdgpu.cik_support=1 kernel parameter is required. Otherwise, AMDGPU will not start and you will end up with either radeon being used instead or the display being frozen during the boot.

Could be that that's it for me. I'm coming back after trying. For those who wrote this in the Wiki: Thank you!

edit2: Yes, that was it for me. Finally having 4.13 working with intel-ucode package installed and both microcode and amdgpu kernel parameters set. That one was tricky. Unlucky combination of necessary configuration interferences with this kernel version. I hope there will, in the future, be a different solution, though.

Re: [SOLVED] System crash after upgrade

same problem here. downgrading back to 4.12.13 + install lts kernel as useable fallback variant.
