[solved] xorg dwm st / font rendering failure

Hello!
and thank you for reading this.

Since last week I have "font rendering failures" every time I start "X" for the FIRST time.
When I close "X" and start it again, all failures are gone.
(I start "X" with "startx" or "exec startx" by hand.)
Downgrading to linux-4.12.13-1 helps, and there are no failures at all.
I am using dwm and st. I also tested xterm, but there are the same issues.
For dwm and st I am using the "Terminus" font. I also tried "Dejavu" with st, but with no luck.
I never edited the fontconfig.

Xorg.log with or without "font rendering failures" are the same, but here is it anyway:

I run a second PC with the same hardware, but with xfce. There are no issues at all.
I tried to load the font cache with "fc-cache" before starting "X", but this done nothing.

I have no idea where to look or what to test next.
I need some hints.
Thank you!

Re: [solved] xorg dwm st / font rendering failure

I also use dwm and st. I also configured st to use terminus font. Here's how I configured it in st's config.h:

char font[] = "xos4 Terminus:pixelsize=12:antialias=false:autohint=false";

Does yours look like this?

Re: [solved] xorg dwm st / font rendering failure

I am using this for dwm and st: "xos4 Terminus:size=12"
I also tried your line, but that does not help.

Re: [solved] xorg dwm st / font rendering failure

In this order:
* add "intel_iommu=off" to the kernel parameters
* try the modesetting driver
* try uxa (on the intel driver)

Thank you for leading me in the right direction.

Removing this line from the Xorg configuration:

Option "TearFree" "true"

solved all issues.

Thank you!
