[Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

Hello all

First of all I'd like to say that I'm not an expert on this. I just learn as I go. This is specially hard because, sometimes, reading the documentation is way over my head.

With this out of the way:
For a while ago my samba workgroup stopped showing on my fime manager. It works if I type directly

smb://192.168.0.1

(or whathever IP the workgroup is on but it isn't visible throughout the computers on the network.
This has always worked. I've only started noticing it a few days ago.

Any ideas of how to fix this or what may be causing it?

I'm using Arch (updated daily)
Cinnamon
Multiple computers connected over ethernet (wi-fi behaves the same way)

Thank you in advance!

btw: Here's a template of my smb.conf file:
(feel free to point any mistakes I'm making)

[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server

[Public]

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

WOW! This is big!
This is the output on the client. Apparently it shows up on a Mac. Go figure...
Should I past the server as well?

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

Big. And boring :-(

Try the behavior on the lts kernel, "cat /etc/fstab" and do you have https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm … emo-share/ installed?

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

Indeed I do. Before and after the behaviour.
I read something about the version of the SMB protocol (1.0) and the 4.13 kernel... how could I change that to check it out?

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

That would mostly rely on how the share is actually mounted/accessed - idk enough about nemos smb extension and this might also depend on a cifs mount in your fstab (thus the questions about the lts kernel and fstab - if it still works with the lts kernel, it's the protocol version default. if there's an entry in fstab, adding "vers=1.0" to the options should do.

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

Well, addin the option on fstab does nothing. 1.0 or 2.0 outputs the same result.

Anyway: as far as I can understand fstab should be edited in order to automatically mount drives/shares/whatever, right? I'm trying to see workgroups in the network.
If I just wanted the shared folders I could just go and add the paths as favourites.
Am I thinking this correctly?
Or can I actually mount a Workgroup?

All I want is to facilitate every computer in the house to see the Music share folder, the Movies share folder, and so on. Not the 192.168.0.1 folder.

btw: If I want to mess with fstab wouldn't nfs be a better shoice over smb?

Thanks again for your patience

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

Well, I kind of got something to work...

Installed Avahi Zeroconf (the nss-mdsn package and started the Anahi daemon) and at least when I open my file manager and hit the Network tab I can see my computers.
In the file manager it works perfectly as before but If I try to had a shared folder in Kodi it doesn't.

At least I can now see other computers and so can everyone in my house.

Still, if anyone got any tips I'd be glad to try them out!

Thanks!

Re: [Samba] Workgroups not visible anymore

The discovery/browsing protocol was deprecated along with SMB1, it is intended that you map the resources you need by a known identificator (or use a more modern browsing method, as has been seen in this thread, however if kodi's implementation doesn't support that yet, that is of course problematic) - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel … rsion-1709 this is expected and by design.

By telling the server to allow the old method again, you are reopening this "potential" security hole. If you feel that you absolutely need this, then of course go ahead.
