Re: Arch-Update

I'd like to think we're off topic!! Lol, kidding anyways, I already made my own simlpe python script that checks for updates, then outputs them in a msn style popup using wxWindows. I have it running through crond so it checks weekly, about it. I use it for personal use, and I don't believe this is nor any projects of the sort are against the 'Arch way' nor do they fail to comply with KISS. But I do still think it should be an optional package.

hmm..... opinion, but in somethings yeah. In a general way of flexibility I still choose gentoo above all, don't missunderstand me I love Arch Linux, I love about it that it is the fastest way to have a distro which is still flexible is Arch Linux, in a matter of minutes from installation you are on a beautiful OpenBox. wink

There's no obstacle in my way to 'get over' iphitus; I'm in no way put-out by the suggestion made by the OP, I simply agree with Ibex that it should only be available as an optional package. The fact that an entire thread was constructed to discuss something that is as you yourself say, 'so basic', suggested to me that the intention was for inclusion in arch as standard. Who knows. I don't really care either way wink If people can use it then great, but IMO it shouldn't be a util included as default, because it's not the KISS way.

Perhaps if you re-read my posts with the assumption in mind that standard inclusion was intended, as I assumed when I wrote them, then you'll see my comments in a different light.

Read the op, it doesnt mention anywhere bout standard inclusion, nor does it even imply it. You're going to a very far stretch to assume that's what he meant as we all know that such a thing would never be included 'by default' on Arch.

We all agree it shouldnt be included by default, there's no debate over that. Speaking as a dev, it would never be in base. I mean seriously, X isnt even in base, so it's quite ludicrous to think we'd include all those deps for one applet. X, GTK or QT, all their depends.... etc.

Re: Arch-Update

ot

speaking od devs & base & all that .... are they any plans for a sunrise type project in Arch ....

I know we have AUR which is cool, but I'm sure users out there would like to contribute to making/developing packages

Re: Arch-Update

Nope, I'm against it.  It's ridiculously easy to type pacman -Suy

I'm not gonna argue with you; I hate these post 'duels'. The fact is that I did assume what I said, and I had my own reasons for doing so.

I still can't. Can somebody please explain to me how this would make anything easier?

As far as function this kind of thing is completely useless, It won't add any new real feature to Pacman.
I see usefullness in that it gives the user more choice, if you would prefer to not open a terminal to do updates, and if you would prefer your system telling you when there are updates instead of the ticker on archlinux.org.
And whenever an idea gives us more choice I am for it!  It is one of the things Linux is all about!

Re: Arch-Update

The best update notifier IMO is when you set www.archlinux.org as your homepage and you see which packages are being updated.
