Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

I ran a full system upgrade tonight. Immediately after the upgrade, my laptop keyboard stopped working in X.

I attached a USB keyboard and was able to get working on the problem. Using the USB keyboard to switch to tty2 got the laptop keyboard working again. Switching back to X caused it to stop responding again.

It took some trial and error, but I found that downgrading libinput from 1.9.1 to 1.8.3 solved the problem. I have the package set in /etc/pacman.conf to ignore upgrading (using IgnorePkg) so as to not break the keyboard again.

Any ideas on how to submit a good bug report on this? Also, would it be worth switching from libinput to evdev?

Thanks!

Re: Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

Do you use a docking station? I have the same problem since upgrade to libinput 1.9.1 but ONLY if the laptop (HP Elitebook 2560p) is used in the HP docking station. If I remove it from there, the keyboard works. I have not found anything in the logs but I will keep searching. And yes, downgrading to libinput 1.8.3 helps as a workaround for now.

@jasonwryan:
I checked the log files. There were no errors.

@demaio:
Yes, I am using a HP docking station. It's for my HP ZBook. I will upgrade to 1.9.1 again and try removing the ZBook from the docking station to see if my problem matches yours.

Same here with HP EliteBook and Docking Station. But if I unplug the docking station the keyboard still doesn't work, only after rebooting the keyboard comes back to life.

Same here with a HP ENVY 13-ab008na, I don't have a docking station. But downgrade works for me too..

Add me to the list. I am having exactly same issues. When using 1.9.1, keyboard stops working completely when using docking station (both keyboards: PS2 and the one on laptop). When removing laptop from docking station, laptops keyboard works instantly. Using HP 640.

Downgrading to libinput 1.8.3-1 helps.

Here is a related upstream bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103561

Do these HP laptops maybe send events that get recognized by the new tablet-mode switch in libinput?

Re: Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

Thanks for the upstream bug report link, progandy. I have added some further debugging observations to it.

Summary: removing/blacklisting the "hp_wmi" module also helps as a workaround instead of downgrading libinput.

Another related bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/56207

Re: Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

Thanks to progandy and to demaio for submitting bug reports.

I have been able to verify that removing my laptop from the docking station also gets the built in keyboard working.

I'm going to try upgrading back to 1.9.1 and then blacklisting hp_wmi to see if that serves as a workaround for my setup.

Re: Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

Keyboard doesn't work when laptop is in docking station.
Happend few days ago, after pacman -Syu.

Laptop: HP Probook 650 G1,
Current kernel: 4.13.11-1-ARCH

Any help would be appreciated.

[edit]

Reverting libinput to 1.8.3 and rebooting worked.

Re: Laptop Keyboard Stopped Working in X After libinput Upgrade

Same problem with HP ProBook 6460b and HP Docking Station.
My keyboard is disabled if I use X11 and if I put my notebook into its docking station. (logical AND)
But if I am working in TTY2-6 (no-X11) it is not disabled and the bug does not occur.
I also noticed that you cannot even enable the caps-lock led of the keyboard when this bug appears.
