[SOLVED] Apache only handshakes with ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

Hi,

I tried to setup apache to server. I got it working but I recently noticed that all handshakes where ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305 is not available fail.

Browsers don't have a problem with that but programs using OpenSSL 1.0.2 or older curl fail to connect. For example OpenSSL 1.0.2 shows:

1996055776:error:14077410:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 alert handshake failure:s23_clnt.c:772:

I tried to find the problem and to start a new configuration twice but somehow I always get the same problem. The logs don't seem to be helpful either so that I think that it's an error in the config somehow.

I hope someone can help me to get this running.
Thanks in advance
Rumbah

My config files: (I anonymized the URL but if it's necessary I can post it)

httpd.conf

# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:/run/httpd

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Re: [SOLVED] Apache only handshakes with ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

Solution is to pass cipher as option to tls.connect, like so: tls.connect(port, host, { cipher: 'RC4-MD5' })

Perhaps the cipher option should be mentioned in the discussion of TLS configuration rather than the command-line option.

Thanks for the answer.

Sorry, I don't understand. Where should I put that? I'm not using Node.js, only Apache and OpenSSL.

Re: [SOLVED] Apache only handshakes with ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

None of the ciphers your server is using are supported by openssl 1.0.2. You need to add one that is supported.

Take your pick from the below, which is from a build of openssl-1.0.2m. Given your current cipher list ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 may be a good pick.

$ ./openssl ciphers | sed 's/:/\n/g'

Re: [SOLVED] Apache only handshakes with ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

Using openssl 1.1.0.g-1 most of the cipherspec seems to not be recognized with that version either only matching ECDHE-ECDSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305:ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

$ pacman -Q openssl
openssl 1.1.0.g-1
$ openssl ciphers ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305:ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA256

Re: [SOLVED] Apache only handshakes with ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305

I got it fixed now thanks to you. I noticed that instead of just reordering the mozilla recommendations with AES128 in front I swapped AES128 and AES256. That way I didn't notice that there is no AES128-SHA384 and AES256-SHA256 and that got the unrecognized encraption methods.

Thanks again, I'll mark it as solved.
