[SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

Edit: the problem was fixed by running dhcpcd -k then restarting dhcpcd.

Hi,

I installed Arch Linux a few days ago, and it was going fine until yesterday.

I can't connect to the internet. The dhcpcd daemon is running and my ethernet connecttion is working (ip link shows UP for enp2s0) but internet connection does not work.

Please can I have some help with this error, and i will give any information about my install if that is helpful.

EDIT: here's some info and logs:

output of ip link:

To clarify, when I ping an IP address such as 8.8.8.8 I do not recieve any packets, but when I ping a URL such as archlinux.org I recieve packets from www.google.com (192.168.66.1). This is what I meant in the title.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

I installed Arch Linux a few days ago, and it was going fine until yesterday.

So what changed?

Please post information about your hardware ('lspci -v'), running kernel ('uname -a'), installed kernel (e.g. 'pacman -Q linux'), and the full journal for an affected session (e.g. 'journalctl -b').

ip link shows UP for enp2s0

"UP" can appear up to 3 times in the relevant line of `ip link` or `ip a` each meaning something different.  If you shared the actual output, we'd not have to guess which one you were referring to.

You should also tell us how you configured your network access.  You say dhcpcd is running, but your title indicates a static IP address.  These are contradictory.

Finally, you say your internet connection "does not work".  What does this mean?  Post actual commands and error messages.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

Based on your edits it looks like your traffic is being redirected - perhaps some sort of captive portal.  What happens if you open a web browser and try to visit the forums, or google.com?

Can you provide the result of a traceroute/mtr?

When I open Firefox and try to visit the forums, I get this error:

Neither traceroute nor mtr are installed on my system, so I can't provide the result of either.

traceroute doesn't have any new dependencies, so you could install it with "pacman -U" after you get it from here and transfer it with a flash drive.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

192.168.66.1 is not google but your router and it doesn't let you go beyond that. Apparently it's also a "working" DNS server which resolves (every?) address to itself.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

Post #6 would suggest not every domain is mapped to the router.  But as google.com is, that should be what is attempted in the browser (which was my suggestion in post #5 (in hindsight I see it was a bit ambiguous, a browser directed to google.com is what I wanted to see results from).

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

What caught me was "when I ping a URL such as archlinux.org I recieve packets from www.google.com (192.168.66.1)."
Boils down to traceroute/tracepath and elaboration on what 192.168.66.1 is (home router, enterprise router, public AP, ...)

My computer is connected to a home network, so 192.168.66.1 is probably my home router.

Can you log into your router (via etiher http or telnet) and try a ping to 8.8.8.8 from there?
Does the router status claim a WAN connection?

Most consumer routers have a management page on port 80 of their IP, so you could just try visiting 192.168.66.1 in your browser.

It says on the back of my router that the "Super Hub" IP address is 192.168.0.1, so I visited it in Firefox. However, I can't get past the login page as it keeps timing out.

What device (vendor/product) is that in particular and do you have *any* other device attached to it getting you internet access?

Did you also try 192.168.66.1? Maybe you or someone else changed the router IP?

What else is connected to your local network? Do you have another device that provides a dhcp server which could conflict with your router and your arch linux gets the wrong ip and gateway?

So I have a Virgin Media Super Hub router (VMDG480) and there are other devices connected to the network with internet access, such as my phone and another PC that runs Windows. There are no other PCs or laptops running Linux in the house.

Connecting to 192.168.66.1 gets stuck on "Waiting for 192.168.66.1".

There are a few other devices connected to the network, all with internet access. I don't know if I have another device that provides a dhcp server.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

Examine the IP of the windows PC (run "ipconfig" in cmd.exe and post the output here) so we can see the working network setup.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't ping static IP address

I have successfully installed traceroute and mtr by arch-chrooting into my system via a live arch USB. If the output of these commands would be useful, please tell me exactly which commands I should type into my terminal. I can also install any other tools needed using this method.
