[solved] Steam fails to start

My Steam client suddenly stopped working.

If I try to start steam non-native with runtime, it is basically the same, just with a fe minutes of runtime unpacking before that. gdb says it exited normally without backtrace.

Nothing in dmesg, journalctl nor log/Xorg. Steam does not have a verbose flag, so those four lines is all I got. I tried Syu, didn't help.

Now, I don't know what has changed, because it worked fine a few days ago.

Anyone having a similar problem?

9800M, are you running the correct drivers, does

glxinfo | grep OpenGL

give you sensible output? 304 has recently been dropped and you might potentially run without hw accel if you were using that. Do you get a core dump? you might want to post a Xorg log as well, maybe there is something non obvious.

No that looks alright, afaik a few days ago, but yeah the 340xx branch is still supported.  But this really looks  strange. Sometimes Steam might corrupt it's config in some way, you might want to back up your games folder (just in case, it shouldn't do anything to them) and try to reset steam with

steam --reset

I'm getting the exact same errors with the nvidia-340xx branch. Could it have anything to do with the "nvidia-340xx-utils" package being version 340.106-1 and the "lib32-nvidia-340xx-utils" package being 340.104-2? Does the 32-bit version need to catch up to the 64 bit version?

Yep, woodape's found the problem. The lib32-nvidia-340xx-utils package is out of sync with it's 64-bit counterpart. It was flagged as out-of-date yesterday, so hopefully it will be updated soon. In the meantime, you could build the updated package yourself (see this article), or you could rollback your system to a point before the nvidia-340xx-utils package was updated (see this article). Note that the latter is not a long-term solution, but a temporary workaround.

This is the issue. I built the lib32-nvidia-340xx-utils package from the PKGBUILD and steam runs fine. I had to set the sha512sums to 'SKIP' as I can't find the correct sum on the nvidia website (I've now stopped looking).

Hmm...yes. Building the package from Abs with bumped up version works. I guess it solves the issue. I just wish the arch package updates were pushed silmultaneously so there wouldn't be issues like this.
