No Ethernet connection after a reboot

So yesterday I was using my ethernet connection just fine. I turned my pc off, turned it on again and suddenly I can't access the internet. I did not install anything at all, nor did I do anything that I don't usually do. The cable is working fine, I checked it with other devices, and I doubt the hardware went wrong since I haven't moved it at all. Here is some information about it:

$ lscpi -v

	Memory at efd00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
	I/O ports at d000 [size=128]
	Capabilities: <access denied>

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

Please post the output of:
uname -a
pacman -Q linux
(Assuming you are running the stock kernel)
ip link
and
find /etc/systemd

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

Not quite what I expected.  But, what are you using to control your network?  For a wired Internet, I would generally expect to see systemd-networkd or dhcpcd service enabled.  What brought it up in the first place?

I am a bit concerned about this

[ 1.894002] alx 0000:03:00.0 enp3s0: renamed from eth0

After you came back up, it reverted to enp3s0 from, presumably, eth0 before you rebooted.
Does it work if you do a sudo ip link set enp3s0 up  followed by a sudo dhcpcd
?

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

He is running dhcpcd, it's in both of his posts.

The "renamed" entry is fine and perfectly normal. That's just systemd's predictable interface naming.

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

'Waiting for carrier' generally means some issues with cabling/connection.

But I don't see how it is started.  Systemd is doing it.

Crap -- I got that backward; I thought the name was reverting to the old name.

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

Thanks for the answers! I'm running dhcpcd as my network service (not sure if this is how I should call it), it starts automatically at boot by systemd. Stopping it and making it start again doesn't work. Tried `sudo ip link set enp3s0 up' and `sudo dhcpcd' without success neither sad . The cable should be fine since I tried it in my laptop.

The cable may be fine, but the port may not be (my laptop has that problem on and off).

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

Silly question, how can I test the port? Is installing windows the only way?

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

That'd definitely be overkill.  Boot a live usb.  Any distro or OS could work.  An archlinux live iso would be a good test as everyone here knows what that's expected to do.

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

Hi,

@Ryunaq - could you place the whole output from dmesg on pastebin.com portal or similar. I've seen part of some interestring message in your  "dmesg | grep alx" and I'd like to see the whole dmesg.
I suspect that the problem may be in the alx driver.

Would you mind to share your thoughts?

@Ryunaq, when you said in your first post that "you didn't install anything", did you also mean that you didn't do any system update?

Also, something else was scratching my mind: would you mind to post your /var/lib/dhcpcd/duid ? Feel free to redact the last six fields (your MAC address) if you think it's not safe to post it here.

Re: No Ethernet connection after a reboot

I'm extremely confused, turned it on to do some stuff with my local files and I had internet again. I guess that confirms it was my port and not arch? Thanks a lot to everyone.

Seems like there is some problem with the driver "alx", because in that part of dmesg there is so called "calltrace". But I cannot tell anything more because Rynaq didn't post the whole dmesg.
With the whole dmesg log I could probably tell more about the problem. For now I would suggest to check if there is any newer kernel or "alx" driver for this kernel. I suspect that the problem is in the driver.
