[SOLVED] Random Logout and Hard Freeze with Recent Kernels...

Hello fellow Archers.

I think this is the correct location for this, as it definitely seems kernel related. Random GUI lockups have been with me sporadically since I've been with Arch (the random logouts are more recent), though it has not been consistent. It usually seems to be related to particular kernel versions, as with some versions this behavior does not seem to exist for me, on either my laptop or my desktop systems, both of which have Intel Core CPUs (i3 on the desktop and i5 on the laptop) and Integrated Intel Graphics cards.

Two times before I was able to resolve the situation, once by setting particular kernel parameters (intel_iommu=off intel_iommu=igfx_off), and the second time by removing the xf86-video-intel driver and the Intel video config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, and simply using xorg's modsetting driver.

Now, however, the two very annoying and frustrating behaviors have returned in force, though far more on the desktop system than the laptop, with the 4.15.4, 4.15.5, and the 4.15.6 kernels, across Arch's default kernel, the Zen kernel, the PF kernel, and surprisingly, even the present LTS kernels (4.14.21 and 4.14.22).

Usually there is nothing to go on in the xorg logs, however, this time something popped up, at the very end of the last session's (which locked up, requiring yet another hard reboot) log:

EDIT: Two things that I realized a bit later that I should mention about my setups is that I use the BFQ I/O scheduler and Zram via the systemd-swap package.

Check/post your dmesg, if it is a kernel driver issue that is the most likely place where something would pop up. Look for coredumps of crashing processes I'd also try to rule out those two things you mention and particularly zram, since the spectre/meltdown patches required significant changes in the memory handling code.

Side note. Mentioning i3 and i5 is completely useless for debugging, these names have been in circulation for 10 years and are only useful for taking a guess at the numbers of cores/threads involved. Always state the exact model.

Does this happen after updating to mesa-17.3.6-1?
17.3.5 intruduced some bug that caused lockups with intel graphics.

EDIT. I'm not sure after all, whether 17.3.5 introduced the issue, or if it happened earlier.
Nevertheless 17.3.6 should fix some lockups on intel hardware.

Thank you ooo. Both of those systems are up-to-date, with mesa at 17.3.6-1, so it doesn't seem to help much. In the process of noodling out these issues, I realized that it was likely one, or an interaction of multiple of, the kernels, xorg, mesa, the xf86-video-intel driver in relation to my CPUs and/or my GPUs. I'm determined to figure this out so I don't have to try to find a stable, workable solution every few kernels.

While wireless issues usually don't impact graphics, "perf: interrupt took to long" messages often appear just after system responsiveness has decreased by a lot .
I have had what I though were hard freezes , that turned out to be driver issues mitigated by perf lowering that setting .
(a few times it took 30+ seconds before the mitigation had effect on responsiveness, giving the impression of a frozen system.)

The other difference between the two systems is that the laptop is using wireless, while I have the desktop using ethernet, with wireless disabled. I've definitely noticed that sort of behaviour too. The desktop system will do that periodically too, with the hard drive going crazy. It often recovers. When it hard freezes, the hard drive stops responding. I often walk away for up to 5 to 10 minutes to see if it will recover when this happens. Sadly, it rarely does.

So just a quick update. Both systems have been stable, with no random lockups/hard freezes or logouts after removing the above mentioned kernel boot options. I'm going to wait a bit to see if things remain stable before changing this thread to [SOLVED]. In all my numerous debugging experiments, I've tried many different kernel parameters, and after noticing the two 'Setting dangerous option - tainted kernel' messages posted above, I checked the other kernel options I'd tried, and realized that at least another two triggered the same messages on my hardware. I will be religiously checking dmesg's warn and error messages for any that I try in the future. Let's hope that things continue to run smoothly. Thank you all for your help up to this point.

Well, I thought that the issue had been resolved, but alas, no. The desktop system just froze again while watching a video in VLC. Both systems have been stable since since I removed the kernel boot parameters mentioned above. It seems that if I don't do anything very intensive, things are fine, but if I do anything that taxes the system at all, it freezes. Bloody hell is this frustrating. It still seems almost completely random, however, as I had been watching videos and doing more intensive activities that did not cause any problem.

This time when it froze, I tried to ping it from my laptop, and it was unreachable. As can be seen at the bottom of the dmesg log, systemd-journald's log was corrupted when I had to do a hard reboot. I've got to figure this nonsense out before I kill my hard drive from all the hard reboots...

Enabling Terminate X with CTRL+ALT+BKSPC and/or kernel REISUB may allow a more graceful reboot (maybe even get better logs of the event).


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Thank you Lone_Wolf, I'll try that, though when it freezes (which the desktop system is still doing, even with the newest 4.15.7-1 kernel) no input responds at all. I'm still trouble shooting. Going back to the default CFQ does not help. I'm testing it now with zram disabled. I just enabled both of your suggestions on the desktop, and will see if they help with more graceful reboots and logging.

After more troubleshooting and testing, I'm still at a loss in regards to the desktop system, as no matter what I do, it completely seizes up  at some point. I tried going back to CFQ (I put all 3 of my Arch installs back to CFQ from BFQ, as there is still a bug in all recent kernels that causes external USB hard drives not to be able to mount, and hangs on shutdown or reboot because the system is still trying to mount any USB hard drives that I happened to plug in), I tried disabling zram (going back to normal swap), both of which seem to have had no noticeable effect. Enabling ctrl+alt+backspace and REISUB did nothing, as when the system freezes, it is a complete hard freeze (no response from the GUI, mouse, keyboard, or the hard drive).

The laptop has been rock solid, however, with no notable problems at all, even under quite heavy use and load , which is good. At this point I have no clue what could be causing the freezing. I'll continue researching and testing.

I feel like an idiot now, as I had been experimenting with zram and zswap, and when enabling and disabling zram, I was not also disabling zswap, so it was always operating through this entire process, and it seems to be a very likely culprit:

Presently, all non-standard kernel boot parameters (aside from REISUB) have been removed, and zram and zswap have both been disabled (back to regular swap for the moment). I'll see how things go and post my findings.

I'm always tinkering and experimenting, and sometimes I lose track of some of the changes that I make. Duh. I think I need to start logging every single change I make to my system in my experimentation process. Thank you for your willingness to help, and your patience.

I have ten same problem on Intel i5 M450

Try to downgrade libinput to version 1.10.1:
pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … pkg.tar.xz

It helps me at the moment, but I'm not sure it was the reason.
If it also helps you, one can report libinput bug.

That is quite unlikely, as the thread predated that update by a few weeks and has a pretty obvious stack trace pointing towards an issue entirely different from libinput.

@ooo @Lone_Wolf @V1del, After going the weekend with no issues on the desktop, it would seem that the issue has finally been resolved. I will be more diligent with recording any changes that I make to my systems, to make troubleshooting quicker and easier. I want to thank you again for your help, I very much appreciated it.
