I'm installing my second Arch box (hurray!) and I'm having a problem with fonts. When I start up KDE (including KDM), all the fonts are rendered as squares. I think I have the locale setup properly including rc.conf, and both the 75 dpi and 100 dpi xorg fonts installed. Xorg.0.log didn't seem to give any clues. Obviously I'm missing something silly. Does anyone know what it is?
Edit-->> OpenOffice works fine, so it seems to be a KDE issue.

Do you only have the 75 dpi and 100 dpi xorg fonts installed? Try installing the ttf-bitstream-vera fonts. By default, KDE uses this one.
Openoffice works because I *think* it comes with its own fonts.

All of the above. I ended up "solving" the problem by installing a set of Windows fonts. For whatever reason, KDE couldn't find the fonts even though xorg.conf has them in the PATH. This is strange. The box I'm writing this on (Arch) doesn't have this problem. The box I set up today does. I'm not going to mark this as solved, nor am I going to file a bug report until I'm 100% sure that I haven't gone mental.

That's the same issue I was having when I installed some Asian font packages after a fresh installed - I just ended up wiping my system and starting fresh, without installing those fonts...
So, no, I don't think you've gone mental

I ran into this too; I'd tried installing xorg from my CD on a new box instead of just doing the base. Then I pacman -Syu'd and instaled KDE. I got the squares thing going on and went back to a base install and installing xorg and KDE later. The problem went away, so I don't really know what caused it. I just figured it was something I had done.

I was curious if it was an order thing. I did install Xorg before KDE, but I didn't get xorg.conf set up until after I downloaded KDE.
Strange, I have two Arch boxes that are both equally up to date, and yet one of them suffers from a lot of strange problems that the other doesn't. And the one that isn't feeling well has nowhere near the software installed. Hmmm???

Scottish, Try the script in this thread. Don't forget to restart X.

I had to make some modifications to the script:
Changed '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts' to '/usr/share/fonts'
It seems to have done the trick. Thanks

Just wanted to confirm that ttf-bitstream-vera did the trick
I was totally blind in kdm. Never had to install this manually before, but there's always a first time i guess
Thanks!
