Openbox. I like the themes, functionality and logic behind the feautres and configuration.

I could have swore there was another 'favorite DE/WM' thread out there somewhere but I can't find it.

Ratpoison. I tried wmii, but it was more complex than what I need. Plus it wastes more screen space than Ratpoison.

I also use Windowlab when I need to use a program that doesn't play nice with Ratpoison (like the Gimp).

Openbox is my favorite

xfce4-svn is what I use.

I like e17 too although I had trouble with placing icons in the ibar. I didn't spend too much time trying to figure it out because I liked xfce4 just as well.

Ion3! Used to prefer Ratpoison, but it freaks out when firefox opens a dialog box or something. Fast, fast and keyboard oriented.

No it doesn't. Not anymore anyway; it may have in the past, although I don't remember it doing so. I have seen it freak out on other programs, but never Firefox.

Re: Your favorite DE/WM?

It seems a lot of people like lightweight desktops, especially *box.

I decided to try Openbox after reading the enthusiastic posts, and I think it may become preferable to fluxbox. However, there is no panel by default with Openbox.

At the risk of digressing from the topic a little: what is the most commonly used panel for these trayless window managers? I like to have email, messenger etc lurking in the corner of my screen.

Suggestions? I've tried PyPanel, and it seems pretty nice, not sure about its stability though.

pypanel is my fav, never seen it crash.

Other popular ones are fbpanel, fspanel, and perlpanel.

I'm a *box lover to the end (ob3, mainly), but during the last few days i've been starting to really like fvwm... it simply oozes power big_smile

My bad then. I haven't used Ratpoison in a while. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Ratpoison, but Ion3 handles dialogs and pop-up the way I like it and the status bar is sweet.

I use fbpanel for the pager, the notification area, and to set the partial-struts WM hint so I have an area at the top of my screen that windows don't maximize over (for opening the menu and for conky). I use an old version (4.1) because the new version is buggy for me (the pager gets all screwed up). Apparently, though, I am the only one that has problems with it.

I use Openbox as my WM. I have used this setup for about 3-4 years now. I have also tried blackbox, fluxbox, wmii-2/3, ion, sawfish, and fvwm. They all had their strong points except for fluxbox; I can't stand using it for some reason.

Cheers,

I am falling in love with ratpoison, and no issue woth firefox. However, issues with gimp ad gmplayer. However, I find very handy to define a specific keyoard shortcut to use a tmpwm for these cases (also because I usually use mplayer from the command line and use gimp not more than a time each month). It seems also very logic to use a tiling WM for suitable apps and a different temporary one with incompatible apps.
So I left pekwm and I use ratpoison for 99% of my time and fluxbox for specific situation (through tmpwm in ratpoison)

That's what I do too, although I use a different tmpwm.

I just wanted to set the record straight for anyone interested in Ratpoison.   8)

I like compiz for the Window Manager ( Because, at this time, only it could use Xgl's features ) and KDE or XFCE ( More XFCE than KDE ) for Desktop Environment.

Xgl+Compiz is pretty cool. I installed them for a little while for the first time today. Couldn't really stick with it since windows weren't dragging right.
