Xorg doesn't work

Suddenly, my Gnome freezes some hours ago. I killed the gnome-session and, when I tried to login from gdm, it doesn't started. Freezes in a black screen. I tried removing all gnome configuration files, doesn't solve. I tried installing xf86-video-vesa, doesn't solve. I tried to create a new user, and doesn't solve again. I tried to install KDE, and it doesn't solve.

The only way I can use my computer from now is from Gnome Wayland. However, some applications, such as Steam games, doesn't work in Wayland.

Switching to tty and running the command "journalctl --follow", I found the following errors:

mar 16 01:59:35 archlinux /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-x-session[16269]: (II) systemd-logind: got pause for 13:68

systemd-logind pauses and never resume.

My software versions are:

xorg-server 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-1
xorg-server-common 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-1
xorg-server-xwayland 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-1

kwayland 5.44.0-1
lib32-wayland 1.14.0-1
wayland 1.14.0-1
wayland-protocols 1.13-1
xorg-server-xwayland 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-1

gnome-shell 3.28.0-1

What can I do about it?

Re: Xorg doesn't work

Is this w/ the broken HDD?
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1778191

Otherwise, start by looking into the xorg log (gdm stores it in the journal) and ensure to run gdm on the xorg backend, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GD … rg_backend

Btw, "isn't solved", "didn't solve" or "doesn't solve" ;-)

My most recently Xorg Log is: https://www.sendspace.com/file/4hn3jb

I'll try the GDM with Xorg backend.

Re: Xorg doesn't work

That log is from yesterday afternoon and shows the server running successfully and cleanly terminate after ~50 seconds.
Also it does not load the VESA driver (not installed at that time - and no, it's not a good idea to use it either).
he modesetting driver runs the internal display at 1366x768 and OpenGL looks healthy as well.

IOW, this log does not indicate a problem with the X11 server. If there's no conflict w/ the wayland driven GDM (get GDM out of the way and try using xinit/startx), the problem will be in the gnome-shell binary, have a closer look at the rest of the journal after a failed login.

I tried to reinstall gnome-shell:

# pacman -S gnome-shell

But it doesn't make any difference.

My system doesn't have any startx or xinit command.

I run journalctl and select all logs from today here. I didn't notice anything unusual (in my newbie experience).

My system doesn't have any startx or xinit command.

Well then, install them. wink

Please don't upload logs to a website which requires the person looking over them to download them. There are plenty of good pastebins out there, use one of them.

Re: Xorg doesn't work

Also the journal is only for the gdm-x-session process, ie. GDM, that's useless. Look at the entire log and pay attention to esp. (but not only!) gnome-shell and systemd outputs.
Also check for coredumps (man coredumpctl)

Well... startx has the same effect has logging in through GDM. xinit gave me a error. I check the Xorg.0.log file:

I'll try it, but it's a little bit complicate to me. With coredumpctl, I made a 900 MB file that I don't know how to use. >.<.

Re: Xorg doesn't work

First of all, remove the vesa driver - it's certainly not helpful.
See whether the error remains and post an updated Xorg log.

Re: Xorg doesn't work

No, at best the gdm GID looks bad, but that should not impact xinit.
Try to enforce a non-rootless Xorg, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Rootless_Xorg
