Fontconfig related problem after last update

Don't know what exactly happened, but when trying to launch some applications after last update (telegram-desktop-bin-dev, vivaldi-snapshot) I get tons of error messages (look below) and it takes long time to start them. Start time became almost normal after I removed noto-fonts-cjk package, cause it was the most heavy font pack on my system and processing errors related to it was taking the most time. However, problem still persists and I know at least one more person who encountered exactly same thing after last update, so I assume problem is global and frankly I'm amused why there are no posts about it yet.

I've just had the sam problem, and it appears the reason for it is lib32-fontconfig. It's still in multilib-testing so its version doesn't match. I've fixed this by installing lib32-fontconfig 2.13.0+10+g58f5285-1.1 from multilib-testing and everything works fine again. People who run pacman -Suy a little while later than us wouldn't have noticed, I guess.

I've fixed this by installing lib32-fontconfig 2.13.0+10+g58f5285-1.1 from multilib-testing and everything works fine again. Ugh. But I don't have lib32-fontconfig installed (I had it installed in the past though).

These changes appeared in the new fontconfig 2.13.0 release.

Aside from that, I've also made programs translatable. so
we see more dependencies on the build time for gettext,
and itstool to generate PO from xml.

I downgraded fontconfig and upgraded it again and now google chrome works, but not telegram.

After some minutes Telegram decided to launch too. Restarting it takes a long time again.

$ pacaur -S fontconfig (upgrade again)
# cp /home/sample/fc/* /etc/fonts/

Telegram, Chrome etc show fonts without issues after the trick.
Waiting until the issue will be fixed.

You can also to try to use your own config file with your own settings. (/etc/fonts/local.conf)
The settings defined in the file set the settings of fonts globally in OS.
I was reading Arch Wiki and I've found pretty good settings... IMHO... for myself (LCD displays).
Maybe you will be also interested in the thing how it looks and if so - look at the file and the given results
P.S. Using google-chrome-dev package from AUR and ttf-croscore.

It seems for me the fonts.dtd file should contain the new lines description syntax:

        <its:rules xmlns:its="http://www.w3.org/2005/11/its" version="1.0">
                <its:translateRule translate="no" selector="/fontconfig/*[not(self::description)]"/>
        </its:rules>

        <description>Default configuration file</description>

It's possible the applis which don't start, fail the validation of the conf file from the fonts.dtd file:

I'm using Nextcloud-2.3.3-x86_64.AppImage for my nextcloud sync, but that broke after upgrading to fontconfig-2.13.0+10+g58f5285-1. Doing a downgrade to fontconfig-2.12.6+5+g665584a-1 fixes this problem, but introduces other issues.

Still investigating and will also look into the config file change if this results in a permanent fix...

I opened a new bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105818

It seems for me the fonts.dtd file should contain the new lines description syntax:

        <its:rules xmlns:its="http://www.w3.org/2005/11/its" version="1.0">
                <its:translateRule translate="no" selector="/fontconfig/*[not(self::description)]"/>
        </its:rules>

        <description>Default configuration file</description>

It's possible the applis which don't start, fail the validation of the conf file from the fonts.dtd file:

<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">

#berbae - your file fixed my issue, thanks.  All fonts in various terminals (gnome terminal, tilix, and terminix) were very squashed together and hard to read.

$ pacaur -S downgrader
# downgrader fontconfig
# select 3 (2.12.6)
# cp /etc/fonts/conf.avail/* /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd /home/sample/fc
$ pacaur -S fontconfig (upgrade again)
# cp /home/sample/fc/* /etc/fonts/

It works for me now but I have to change the cp commands:

# cp -r /etc/fonts/* /home/sample/fc
...
# sudo cp -fr /home/sample/fc/* /etc/fonts/

... those warnings and errors isn't our bug. again, don't mix up config files and library. you could still use the older config files with newer library but the newer config files may not works with older library like that.

I understand this to mean that the libraries of the not working applis should be adapted to the new fontconfig conf files, and that there is no bug in fontconfig proper.
As a workaround presently, the old fontconfig conf files can be used with the old libraries of the not working applis (as shown in the posts above to downgrade only the conf files from the previous fontconfig package).

So it seems that new bugs need to be opened in the not working applis bug tracker sites, for the developers there to adapt their libraries to the last fontconfig release.

The problem is Chromium and all its derivates: Google Chrome, Vivaldi, Telegram, etc... It ships its own version of fontconfig. An outdated version.

Using your own version of fontconfig instead of the system version creates this problem. Not to mention the absurdity of it.
I think it's a problem they're going to have a hard time solving.
