This may sound like a silly question, but are moderators chosen at random from a few people who are very helpful in the forums? Or can you "sign up" to be one?

When a position opens up, existing moderators nominate members who regularly help others and demonstrate knowledge of Arch Linux and its community. The moderation team then discusses the nominations and eventually votes. Selected members are then asked if they want to join the team. There is no sign-up process, but well-known active members of the community who express an interest in joining the team will be considered if they meet the other criteria.
You can also buy your way in by bribing the entire team with tacos (or with poutine in some cases).

This is the best way to expedite your application.
Are you familiar with our Forum Rules, and How To Ask Questions The Smart Way?

Right, but the other way is also possible. Standard, even. *wink* *nudge*
