Does anybody else have the problem that steam locks up and the GUI becomes unresponsive after start? If so, does anybody know a workaround or how to fix that?

You'd find several recent potentially related threads if you search the forums.
There is no way to know if any of them are the same problem, however, as you've given us absolutely nothing to go on.

I found nothing related to the recent Xorg 1.20 update.

Sorry. I looked at steam's console output. I looked at Xorg's logfiles. And I found nothing. Steam just locks up. My best guest is that the cause is some of the libraries bundles with steam. But I have nothing to go on either. So I can't give you anything to go on. So I'm just looking for people who have the same problem as me. It's definitely related to the recent Xorg 1.20 update, however. I had steam lock up on two machines since they got the Xorg 1.20 update.
Maybe I should have said that only my Intel graphics card is active. I'm using the modesetting driver and my system is otherwise up-to-date.

It's possibly related to the issues I have been having with xrandr crashing when I try to run
xrandr --output eDP-1 --auto --primary --output HDMI-1 --auto --same-as eDP-1
As a temporary work around until the issue has been fixed, after a system update, I have been regressing xf86-video-intel and xorg-server
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-video-intel-1:2.99.917+829+gd7dfab62-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

I am having a similar problem.
I am on Gnome, on a laptop with a bumblebee setup to use an intel chipset or a nvidia graphic card.
When I launch Steam, for about 10 seconds, everything works fine, and then the UI just freeze and becomes completely unresponsive. I tried in Wayland and Xorg sessions both, I tried with primusrun/optirun and without it, and I tried downgrading the packages mentioned by IrvineHimself, to no avail.
Why is this in Newbie Corner rather than Multimedia and games?

I looked at steam's console output. I looked at Xorg's logfiles. And I found nothing.
The forum guidlines are not for you to look at the relevant output and logs, but to post them so we can look at them. The very premise of a support forum is that different members will have different aptitudes in interpreting diagnostic information for various problems. If you think your aptitude in diagnosing this problem is higher than anyone else's here then there's really no reason for you to ask for help here.

.... I tried downgrading the packages mentioned by IrvineHimself, to no avail.
Then its probably not solely a problem with the xorg-server, my money would be on Mesa(?) You can use my update list for the gui freezing problem to help narrow down possible candidates. Then again, it is possible all three issues are completely unrelated
Why is this in Newbie Corner rather than Multimedia and games?
Probably because, if there is an issue with the Xorg-server, it will be affecting more than just Gamers, and the more information the bug hunters have, the more likely they will find a solution.

While you provided logs and output which is useful to tracking down an issue, the OP provided virtually no information. That is most likely what had it moved to the NC.

So I did a bit more test. I created a new user to start from a clean state, and there was no freeze at first, it downloaded the full Steam archive, unpacked it an all, I was then able to download a full 300mo game and launch it twice before… it froze again. Next time I tried to launch Steam, it almost instantly froze.
Weird.
I also tried both Native and Runtime versions of Steam, the problem was the same.

Do you have Steam installed, and do you suffer from the bug on it? I started installing the alarm-clock package from AUR, look at the URL, found it was apparently made by some rapper, and got scared about killer clown running at me to kill me with a hatchet so I stopped . (look up ICP if confused by the joke ). So if you could check if you have the bug with Steam or not, it might help to check if the issues are related to each other.
I'll try to downgrade those other package too and let you know the result.
While you provided logs and output which is useful to tracking down an issue, the OP provided virtually no information. That is most likely what had it moved to the NC.
Hopefully it can be moved back?

Downgrading the packages did the trick, thanks, now to upgrade them until I find exactly which one are responsible (because I don't think it's curl fault for instance)!
Offline
Ok apparently it just worked once for quite a long time but it doesn't work anymore even with downgrading all packages again. So I'm not sure what else to try.
Offline
I don't have steam installed, but, as I pointed out, for the last couple of day's I have been having problems with a variety of packages.
Xrandr crashing when mirroring screens
temporarily fixed by downgrading xf86-video-intel and xorg-server, waiting for either a fix to xorg-server or upgrade of xrandr
Mono update crashing Keepass
fixed when Keepass was updated
Various alarm clock gui's freezing
trying to fix by migrating to systemd timers
So, as you can see from the first issue I listed, if this is a problem with the xorg-server, then I am definitely very much interested in what ever progress you make.
I should hasten to add that, for me, this is a strange situation. Normally my set-up works very smoothly and I can't recall the last time I had any issues caused by upgrades. What makes it even more confusing is that currently my main project is writing AppArmor profiles for low level daemons such as: gvfsd, udiskd, tumblerd...... etc, etc. Luckily, I have my shiny new SELinux enabled kernel to definatively eliminate the AppArmor profiles as being the source of my problems.
Sorry I can't be of more help

FWIW, downgrading to xorg 1.19 resolves this issue for me on my Purism Librem 15v3. I was able to consistently replicate this by starting Steam and switching over to Firefox and then switching back. Upon switching back, the GUI for Steam would be locked. I can't find anything interesting in the log files that indicates what the problem may be however. But in any event, I just want to thank the OP for providing us with a workaround for the issue as this was becoming infuriating.

Can you guys that are on intel verify if the issues still exist if you remove xf86-video-intel? It has been on life support for years and likely there were some more invasive changes done now that it hasn't been adjusted against yet. The xorg modesetting driver is developed in tandem with the server and should implement all of the new functionality

I don't use xf86-video-intel. Haven't used it in years. Straight up mode setting over here.

I'm also not using the intel driver. I uninstalled the intel driver and switched to using the modesetting driver years ago.

This seems to be discussed here, also includes a mesa patch supposed to fix this. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam- … ssues/5480
