[Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

Hello.

This has been my first week using Linux. I have been enjoying the installation and configuration so far overcoming the problems by researching. However, after a system update and reboot I am unable to log into Xorg. Prior to this update the system had not been rebooted for a day, and the many configuration tweaks done in that day are making myself unable to diagnose the problem.

I am using no display manager and I have configured my .xinitrc file and startx to run after login. This set up with i3 was working perfectly before. Now, after entering the user and password, Xorg starts and a disfigured version of my setup appears. Seems like a video-card related problem and there is no input from keyboard/mouse/touchpad. Only the laptop-keyboard-light works, but I think it is controlled by the BIOS. The machine is an Dell XPS 15 9560 with dual GPU, Bumblebee was set up and was working fine. I can force a reboot holding the power button.

The Xorg log follows:

The warnings/errors about fonts and ACPI seem to be normal (I think after research).

What I have tried so far to address the module errors:
  *Using the prior Xorg config.
*Using the xorg.config template from xorg -configure
  *Deleting xorg.config and xorg.config.d
  *Reinstalling xorg-server xorg-xinit and bumblebee
The previous log was generated under these circumstances.

If I log into root, su to my user and run startx, Xorg server terminates with an error without leaving the command line. The Xorg log is different after this method.

The fonts, ACPI and module errors are present aswell, but there are two new: the systemd-logind one and the virtual console one.  I have been unable to find solutions to try for them.

If I cannot get this working I will reinstall arch.

Excuse my English if it has not been precise. I will gladly provide any additional output / config.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and time.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

Don't worry about the second log failing: that would not be expected to work, you cannot run X without a proper login session which you do not get when su'ing from root.

The first log doesn't have anything that jumps out as problematic*: it looks like Xorg is running just fine - and it does so for 23 seconds (presumably that's how long you let it run before shutting down).  So you can log in to Xorg.  Can you elaborate on the actual symptoms, what does "a disfigured version of my setup" look like?  Disfigured in what way?  Is the resolution wrong?  Is the color wrong?

Can you post your ~/.xinitrc.  And can you try just starting a terminal from xinitrc and nothing else to see if it really is a problem running X or just some WM configuration issue.

*nothing jumps out to me as problematic, but I don't have experience with hybrid graphics.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

I had a problem with last update too, I got stuck at boot, I think something with Nvidia drivers is not right.
The commands belew might help you identify the problems :

systemctl --failed
dmesg

For the moment i just did a temporary fix by downgrading all the packages to a previous snapshot from the archive.

There appear to be some programs started (Gimp, numberlines from vim, my clipboard manager), but it is all stripped in weird lines. This surpraises me because none of this programs are configured to start automatically. The mouse is static in the middle and the keyboard does not work (appart from the keyboard-light). Color and resolution seem to be fine.

Here is a link to a photo of the screen.

If I rename my .xinitrc file Xorg really does not boot and kicks me out to the login screen. The log error is the same but with different numbers in brackets, so I assume is a timestamp.

For the moment i just did a temporary fix by downgrading all the packages to a previous snapshot from the archive.

I stopped reading the downgrade section of the wiki before the kernel section, I did not know this existed. Thank you for pointing it out to me.

Thank you again for your time.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

Something in your i3 config, try to move ~/.config/i3/ away.
Also do not fork things like setxkbmap, this can have unexpected consequences because of the disordered invocation (and updating the kbd map tends to be slow)

If I rename my .xinitrc file Xorg really does not boot and kicks me out to the login screen.

That's to be expected.  I didn't suggest just renaming your .xinitrc.  I suggested just starting something simple like a terminal with it so we could take i3 out of the equation.  I believe this would be even more effective than the above-suggested moving of i3's configs - and it would certainly be easier.

Given the symptoms, I doubt this problem actually has anything to do with your WM or it's configs, but given that this is the easiest thing to test/rule-out I'd like to really rule it out before looking into graphics drivers (which is where my suspicion is leaning).

So just temporarily add a single line to the top of your ~/.xinitrc that exec's your favorite terminal, e.g.

exec xterm

if you have xterm installed.  The use startx or xinit from the tty and see if you get a functional terminal window.

The i3 first configuration window appears, and there does not seem to be any graphical error. However, there is no input from mouse/keyboard. Cannot even ctrl+alt+F2.

Thank you for your input, I will look to address this after this problem.

Sorry about the missundertanding. After adding "exec urxvt" and login in, the terminal window appears in a corner of the screen. The terminal window that appears is not configured. urxvt (should) gets its configuration from Xresources, I do not know if this is expected or not. Again, I cannot type anything, nor ctrl+alt+f2, nor use the mouse.

Thank you again.

In this case, no, it's not expected to have any settings from Xresources.  So the keyboard not working is a Xorg level problem, but are there graphical glitches or issues with just the terminal there?

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

The screen is completely black, except for the white terminal that is loaded in the top-left corner of the screen. The font seems to be default size and it is readable. I do not know if this is the expected behaviour, or if the terminal should take the whole screen.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

No that is expected.  So it sounds like any graphical issues you had with i3 might be particular to i3 ... yet there is some other problem with the keyboard.  Odd.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

As for i3: some xrandr call in your i3wm config. Probably several of them, all forked :-P

There's suspiciously no "catch all" rule, no mentioning of evdev or libinput in your xorg log - so no keyboard nor any mouse is handled.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

I do not have any xrandr calls, nor have it installed. I plan to be using it when configuring additional monitors to the laptop.

As for the pacman command:

libxxf86vm
xf86-input-libinput
xorgproto

I have not installed the xf86-video-intel package as recommended by my laptop wikipage.

Re: [Solved] No input after login into Xorg.

Well, there's your input problem.
What happened to the file and why?
Place it back. In doubt, re-install xf86-input-libinput.

What I have tried so far to address the module errors:
  *Using the prior Xorg config.
*Using the xorg.config template from xorg -configure

  *Reinstalling xorg-server xorg-xinit and bumblebee

I guess I must have deleted it instead of the /etc version by accident.

After adding the file and reinstalling the package, I could log into Xorg if my xinitrc only started a terminal, as sugested by Trilby. There must have been a problem aswell with my i3 config, I have reset it and everything is working as expected.

I have set the keyboard layout and options within the xorg configuration files, thank you again for recommending not using setxkbmap in xinitrc for this.

I will tag the post as solved. Should I edit the tittle too to reflect more accurately the issue?

Thank you once more both of you for your help and time.

Done. I have now realized that there was not visual glitch, just the input issue.
