[Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Hi, I am really new configuring the desktop environment. Right now I am using gnome as a default desktop environment and GDM as a login manager.
The problem is that I installed cinnamon desktop but I can not use it, when I put in the terminal

"cinnamon --replace"

I get :

(cinnamon:4575): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 20:18:43.214: gdk_x11_display_set_window_scale: assertion 'GDK_IS_X11_DISPLAY (display)' failed

Also when I choose cinnamon in the gdm display, it seems to enter to the desktop manager but then returns to the gdm display again.
This happens also when I try to use another desktop environment different of gnome 3 e.g. cinnamon, mate.
I have a nvidia gforce MX150 as a dedicated card with  nvidia-390xx driver and Bumblebee.  Until now I have tried a lot things but I have not
been able to fix the problem. Any guess?. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

cinnamon --replace isn't going to do what you want. Check the logs, see why it's failing when started from GDM.

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Thanks for your reply. I checked the log files, but the /var/log/gdm directory is empty. And the Xorg.1.log says:

255.801] Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[ 255.801] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 390.67 Fri Jun 1 02:45:19 PDT 2018
[ 255.801] (II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs
[ 255.801] (EE) No devices detected.
[ 255.801] (EE)

do you know if this the log file that I have to check?

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Post a complete xorg log, the normally correct and most up to date file should be xorg.0.log though if you are using GDM that might dump relevant info to journal, post

journalctl -b --unit=gdm

after a failed startup attempt.

Hi, this is the output for journalctl

 $ journalctl -b --unit=gdm

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

That's an old log. Do you have anything more recent in ~/.local/share/xorg? FWIW you might have to explicitly disable wayland in GDM, and can you post

systemctl status bumblebeed
journalctl -b #In case that the --unit command simply filtered too much.

No, I don't have anything in ~/.local/share/X11. I only find a  log file in ~/.local/share/xorg, and it was created today

 $ ls -lrt
total 16

If you disabled / remove 20-nvidia.conf and restart GDM what is the xorg.log then if it still fails?

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

I removed the 20-nvidia.conf, and now I'm able to initiate cinnamon; but so far it appears to run a little bit slow. And in the ~/.local/share/xorg/./Xorg.0.log
appears the error

do you think that I need to install another intel driver?. Thank you for your help

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Intel is installed, but modesetting is preferred.
You likely still have some configlet around that configures the modesetting driver?

Also please ensure to have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus and the related articles to know your options reg. optimus systems.

Thanks for your answer, but I have a few doubts about it. With the configlet, do you mean the files inside the xorg.conf.d directory? and is it sufficient to remove the xf86-video-intel package
to active the modesetting?. Sorry for the doubts but I am new configuring this kind of thing.

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

You *are* on modesetting and loqs idea was to try whether the intel ddx driver performs better.
About the configlet: yes, just "grep -r modesetting /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" - iirc the nvidia-utils package installs /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf which might be prone to do this.

Btw, OT: I doubt that you've "doubts" but rather "questions" or maybe "uncertainties" ;-)

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

You are right, I have the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf file. And the new  "question" [ ;-) ] is, what should I do with this file, should I delete it?

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Briefly edit it, replace "modesetting" with "intel", restart the X11 server and see whether that has a positive impact on the performace.
(Also check the xorg log to ensure the intel driver is actually used now)

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

The question was, whether it has positive performance impact.
If you think so, you should add some configlet in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-force_intel.conf to override the configlet it /usr/share/… because the latter will likely get overridden with the next update (or you could take that incident as reminder for an updated test of the modesetting driver)

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.

Re: [Solved] cinnamon does not start (Segmentation fault (core dumped))

Hi, I am sorry for the delay in the answer. I have been using the modesetting and intel drivers and now I think both have a good performance. Actually, the Xorg.0.log shows that the system loads first the modesettings driver and then loads the intel driver, for the modeseetings case, and inversely for the case of the intel case, i.e. first intel driver and then modesetting; I'm not sure if this the correct behaviour but so far I am comfortable with the performance.
So in order to prevent the file from being overwritten I going to keep the modesetting option in the configuration file.  Thank you for all your help.
