Internet over wireless

Hello,

I have a problem. When I am at home, I have a wireless internet connection which works without any problem. Now I am abroad, and I cannot get it to work for some reason. This is the case:

iwlist scan gives two networks: NIASD on channel 6 and NIASD on channel 1. It works with static IPs (not dhcp). the router is 192.168.123.101. I get to the point where I can ping my own IP, but I cannot ping the router for some reason. output of ifconfig and iwconfig seem ok as well...

Any ideas. Unfortunately I cannot post any output, because this is not my computer.

Re: Internet over wireless

Maybe you need to configure WEP or WPA?

Re: Internet over wireless

Is it not possible to ping the router before you configure WEP or WPA?

Re: Internet over wireless

Are you sure that these networks have no encryption in the form of WEP or WAP?

Also are these networks restricted in anyway that you might no about? MAC address login maybe?

Re: Internet over wireless

Yes there is some kind of encryption. But I only have a ssid and a password. I tried to connect to the network by passing these options to iwconfig (essid MYSSID key s:MYPASSWD) I also tried other options such as mode managed and ad-hoc, but nothing happens.

I have not tried to connect with WPA yet, since I do not know how that works exactly. I tried through the conf.d/wireless to enable WPA and pass the same passphrase to there, but that didnt work either.

I think there should be a wiki about this: "how to connect to a wireless network if you only have a running windows PC on that network".

Re: Internet over wireless

I'd try the key in hex format i.e.

key AA:BB:CC:DD:11:22:33:44:EE:FF:GG:HH:55

instead of s: . I used to have a 3Com router, and the passphrase I used on that didn't work with iwconfig.

Re: Internet over wireless

It seems a good excuse to write an automatic wireless configuration program (WEP/WPA cracking) for Arch tongue
