Hello,
Thanks to this forum I now have my ALSA sound system configured for multiple applications : ALSA multiple applications .
I'm trying to keep the installation light without a desktop environment. The system is a connected to a HDMI display. I am using the inbuilt speakers of the HDMI display.
The volume of vlc can be controlled from the application and chromium will mute a site but I want to be able to mute all applications and adjust the volume centrally from alsamixer or from the command line with amixer for example.
I start alsamixer. There are 7 items: Master, PCM, Mic, Mic Boost, S/PDIF, Beep, and LoopBack Mixing.
Muting and changing the volume of Master, PCM have no effect. However: S/PDIF does mute everything.
What adjustments do I need to make?

Do you use a desktop environment? Most of them have an applet or some setting that allows you to control the volume. Also I know PulseAudio can do this, but it would just add another layer of complexity to your sound system.

As HDMI is a digital output you only have the single SPDIF control that you can enable or disable, volume control is expected to be done by the receiver (i.e. likely your monitor in this case) , what's a better option now depends on what you want exactly, if you'd like to be able to have separate mixer controls for each application plus a master control for HDMI, pulseaudio is the best option. If you just want a master mixer control for your HDMI output you'll have to set up the softvol alsa plugin see this thread as well: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=214941
Not sure what the best config here would be while retaining the default dmix maybe something like
