destroyed my system (Fixed)

I have seriously mangled this system in the manner described here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=23522
I managed to revert my kernel to 2.6.16 branch, and get my wireless connection back up using ndiswrapper. However I have some serious issues. My comp will no longer have anything to do with ftp. pacman, kbear, konqueror and firefox all refuse to connect to ftp servers including ftp.archlinux.org. Pacman gives me a "Control socket read failed" message, and the others simply timeout. I am also completely unable to connect to irc.freenode.net (and other irc servers), so I can't ask for help in #archlinux. This all happened after upgrading the following packages:
kernel26-2.6.17 (and assosciated depends such as mkinitcpio), klibc, klibc-extras,klibc-udev, bcm43xx-fwcutter, and wireless_tools. Those were the only packages upgraded.
Web pages load very slowly, but not so slowly as to justify a 300 second timeout on an ftp server.
I'm really hoping someone can point me in the direction of a fix, even if it's time consuming,as I'd really hate to have to reformat what was a perfectly good system yesterday.

Thanks in advance

Re: destroyed my system (Fixed)

Do you have any reason not to format the HDD?

and sorry i have no lower kernel version atm, ask someone else who have older kernel version.

and random thought,
1. try to use arch install CD as recovery tool,
2. next time always keep older kernel version, and set it on grub/lilo.

Re: destroyed my system (Fixed)

Hmmm....
Reformatting is not an option because I'm working on someone elses machine that lives 45 miles from my house and I have to leave here in a few hours. Not sure when I will be albe to make it back out here as I don't drive.
Unless I add it to my modules array, bcm43xx module is not loaded at boot, so blacklisting it does me no good.
Using the 2.6.17 kernel with the bcm43xx driver I can configure my card properly though iwconfig, and even get it to register in ifconfig (since I disabled my onboard lan in bios, resolving the interface conflict)....but dhcpcd eth0 (as it's listed when using the bcm43xx driver) results in one of 2 events: Either the light immediateloy goes off on the card and eth0 disappears from ifconfig...or my entire machine locks up and must be reset manually.
I think I will likely leave the machine with the semi-functional kernel and burn a disk with the ndiswrapper package from repo to install the next time I come out this way.
Thanks again for all the help smile

Re: destroyed my system (Fixed)

I'm still very unclear to the nature of the issues I was having with ftp, but it seems that it was related to my satellite connection, and not arch. I simply left the machine alone for a bit and when i returned I was able to successfully issue pacman -Syu, solving all of my issues except the disgusting wifi connection speed (Again, not arch's fault). I have not yet attempted to connect using the bcm43xx driver, but the 2.6.17 kernel and ndiswrapper are working fine now so the stress is gone smile
Thanks once again for the prompt replies to my issues, you guys are great
