I missed the part where it says installing the Intel drivers is optional and not recommended. I removed them, and after some tweaking, I now have two external displays without the laptop display working again, albeit with scaling because they aren't 4k monitors. I'm ordering an LG 43" 4k this week to solve that issue. Thanks again for your suggestions!

Hey everyone,

it's been a long time since my last post here, since everything was working perfectly. If anyone is reading, throw out the shitty killer wifi card and get yourselves an intel card. That solved at least the network performance issues, if not a few things more.

None the less, I did an package upgrade lately, it was pretty big with a lot of packets to be updated. Since this update I cannot connect external displays during runtime anymore. My setup was working fine. I am was able to connect my two displays without a lot of hassle.

One is connected via TB to DisplayPort the otherone via HDMI to DVI. Since the update my laptop freezes as soon as I connect the displays during runtime. Booting with the displays pre-connected is working fine (more or less).

Anyone else having this problem? This is what happens in journalctl around the time of connecting the displays:

I got this by switching to the console, and then connecting the displays. That seems to be working fine. I also can switch back to the xserver and that behaves as if I booted with the screens connected.

Yes, this is a common problem, you can use Xorg in the meantime as a workaround (problem is caused by Wayland). A bug report can be found here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/93
Your logs look a bit different to the ones in the issue description though, maybe you should submit them there as well.

I recently reinstalled arch on my 9560 and have run into some weird power management issues since. For some reason the first install had everything working correctly power management wise, it would stay at around 4 watts idle and go up to 10 with moderate use. After the reinstall things work correctly until I suspend and then resume. After doing so, power usage is consistent with the dGPU not being actually powered off. I've tried both the ACPI method and the bumblebee+bbswitch method mentioned in the wiki entry for the 9560, but to no avail. I really don't care too much about being able to use the dGPU, but I do want to have it consistently stay off when I'm not actively wanting to use it. I have gotten arch on my XPS 15 9560 and I added the following flags `enable_fbc=1 enable_psr=1 disable_power_well=0` on i915 driver as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … nel_module

However I do see the mentioned flickering every few minutes. What's the set of flags you guys use that doesn't cause the flickering?

I have had issues with using multiple monitors and scaling for the last couple of weeks. So I tried and downgrade my xorg packages as you suggested, and that solved my issue as well. So clearly there are some quite breaking changes in xorg. Do anyone know what is in fact going on, and if there is any other solution to the problem other than downgrading the packages?

The xrandr-command I use to start my external screen is:

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 2560x1440 --panning 4224x2160+3840+0 --scale 1.65x1.5 --right-of eDP-1

However, I'm finding my machine runs extremely hot when idle (lm_sensors reports around 70 degrees celsius), and I'm finding that the processor frequency does not seem to be moving a whole lot from it's maximum. Using a script I found another user post, I got the below output:

From this I can see it hasn't gone under 3.4GHz. Has anyone else run into this issue? I could disable intel_pstates, but not sure if that's a proper fix, or more of a 'hack'. I also read in other posts from a couple of years back that there were potential issues in the kernel refresh rate, but not sure if that is still an issue now. I'll mention too, the only thing that seems to be consuming any CPU is tracker-miner-fs, which I gather is an indexing service for Gnome (and that's only 12%).

My setup is near enough to vanilla as possible (running Gnome as my desktop environment), and I've disabled the Nvidia GPU. Any help with this is appreciated!

EDIT: I decided to re-flash the latest BIOS image, and also ran through powertop enabling all the 'bad' suggestions (but these ended up reverting to bad after I'd allowed it to write out all necessary files anyway). After doing this and restarting my PC, I've ended up with the following:

The issue is that the laptop screen doesn't display anything but an external monitor works fine. Using the gnome display applet it thinks the display is working but nothing is shown. Looking at the logs I see an error as follows:

[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to train eDP-1...

I see the same behavior on GDM (Wayland) and my desktop (X)

I got the kernel upgrade along with the Gnome 3.30 so at first I thought it was an Gnome issue but reverting the kernel to 4.18.7 fixes the issue for me.

Yep this fixed it for me too! To clarify, how did you end up figuring out it was this parameter? Just your testing with the screen suspending and the fact everything was still active in the background (despite not displaying)?

No great insight. Since I knew it was just a screen blanking problem and since the problem was not widely reported across the forums/reddit I figured it was quite specific to my notebook type or configuration so I looked at my boot settings and that one seemed relevant.

Once in a while, when plugging a USB device into the dock the xHCI host controller dies. Seems to happen when there is heavier activity on the USBs connected to the dock IE: USB audio, USB serial adapter, Raspberry PI connected. I've spent hours googling this issue and have found a bug report on the redhat forums which describes my issue exactly https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1600126 on which I have also posted. Monitors (DP & HDMI on dock) continue to work despite all the USBs dying. Power cycling the dock does not always fix it and sometimes results in the monitors ceasing to work while the USBs recover. The only reliable fix is to unplug TB from PC and power and also reboot the PC.

Has anyone experienced this issue here before? Any suggestions on further troubleshooting? BIOS is up to date according to fwupdmgr.

For anyone else out there where this doesn't work...

I didn't have the i915.enable_psr option specified on my boot commandline.  Nonetheless, I had to add it and explicitly set i915.enable_psr=0.  When I had a look in the module info the default is "-1" which is the "chipset default".  It's entirely possible that I have set enable_psr=1 at some point in the past and I wonder if it persisted in the hardware in some manner?  (Otherwise, it's possible different hardware has ended up with different defaults.  EDIT - it's also possible that you all set the value to zero rather than deleting the option so my situation hasn't presented it self.)

In any event, thanks bulletmark, you saved me some time looking...

I've been experiencing the same issue. Removed i915.enable_psr=1 to no effect. Thanks for advising to explicitly set it to i915.enable_psr=0.

From what I can tell, the following line is presented every time display fails to turn on:

[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* [CONNECTOR:71:eDP-1] Link Training failed at link rate = 540000, lane count = 4

Using the power button to suspend/wake can bring the display online. (On GDM and after logging in)
GNOME display settings then also claims the refresh rate is at 120Hz

Does anybody know if this is issue known/reported upstream somewhere? I'd like to report it to thee intel-gfx tracker but I'm not sure I understand what's wrong enough for a meaningful bug report.

What is everyone here using for Power Management / Hibernate and Restore? I see lots of options from the wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Power_management) but I really would like to know what others are using that is stable.

Currently I am not even sure what I have, but I do know that sometimes my laptop screen goes off, and won't come back on again. I have to ssh to it and reboot to gain access to the screen again so I definitely need something that works.

I am using an XPS 13 9560 with Arch and I have overheating problems, so I tried to play with thermald.
(When I stress the CPU it goes over 90 degrees and I have to kill processes in order to get a 'normal' temperature.)
However thermald's documentation is not complete and I did not figure out satisfying parameters so far.

To those who obtained satisfying thermald settings (with the XPS 13), would you mind sharing your config files (thermal-conf.xml and  thermal-cpu-cdev-order.xml, in /etc/thermald/)?
I would also be interested to know the configuration files of those who are using the pre-installed ubuntu setup (if any on this forum smile ), as it might be optimized for the hardware.

What I found so far includes:

@lipsum, what is the idle temperature, and what does it mean you stress it, in which way? How high does it go?
Keep in mind that problem could be coming from the hardware side. Something as simple as repasting could already help a lot if paste is not applied well.

The idle temperature is around 33.
Unlike others in this thread, the laptop does not run too hot with glxgears: the temperature stays between 70 and 80 (with sometimes short jumps above).
By stressing, I mean running cpu-expensive tasks (gcc, computations, etc.). This can be reproduced with the utility 'stress -c 4' The temperature then rises above 90 and does not go down.
In my opinion temperature above 90 is not normal/healthy/desirable.

Yes, the problem may come from the hardware. I am trying to see if I could improve the situation only playing with software, in order to avoid the hassle of calling the warranty service and risking to have my laptop replaced by one that is performs even worse or has coil whine (silly?). And because the laptop is still under warrantee, I cannot (I think) open it to add thermal pads or tape inside, but I will do it as soon as the warrantee ends if the problem is not solved at this point.

I recently run into very strange performance issues. I'm an android developer and my clean build times went up to like 12 minutes for my current application.
I ran the build on my early 2015 macbook 13'' and it built my application within 4 minutes. So I suspect something is terribly wrong with my machine.

I did a sysbench benchmark. You can easily install it from pacman:

pacman -Syu sysbench

The benchmark takes like 1 minute and the command I ran is:

Wow this is a complete game changer. I changed the governor to performance and now my machine is faster than yours (because mitigations are off I guess).
My clean build is now down to sth like 50 seconds instead of 12 minutes.

I don't get it: Why is a scheduler set as default that completely cripples the system?
Is it a driver bug? I tested this on the latest precision with a i9-9880H and there the performance is not so severely crippled with the default scheduler also being powersafe.
