As stated, I plugged in an Xbox 360 controller into the USB hub on my Dell XPS9560.
Instantly it disabled the ethernet connection (which was using a USB-C port) and switched to WiFi.
I tried unplugging and plugging the ethernet cable, and rebooting... ethernet won't come back on.
Could use some guidance and how to start troubleshooting ... thanks in advance
EDIT: I found the following lines in dmesg which I believe are pertinent:

Says "no carrier" ie. the communication between the interface and the switch is broken.
=> Cable. Ensure it's properly plugged on both ends and in doubt try a different one.
The xbox controller is likely coincidental.

You were right Seth- when i was rummaging around for the controller I turned off the power bar to my router
